When should the fan be running? Even when engine warm it does not run. How do I know it is functioning prpperly? Any insight would be appreciated. Also what is the perceived benefits of an electric main engine fan ipo the heavy viscous monster?
 
Mine spins all the time. This is what rave says about it.

I think the OP is referring to the fan that sits just behind the grill, not the engine fan, if so they very rarely run -

Its not uncommon for them to seize due to their position and that they ingest all the road muck and salt.
Try turning the blades with a long finger or screwdriver to make sure its not seized.

Aah I see. The aircon fans are often seized, probably through lack of use. Mine was, a new one was an extortionate amount of money so I got a used one. I'm not sure how to prevent them seizing, I try and remember to turn it on with the nanocom every now and then.

Also what are your thoughts about replacing the viscous fan with a Revotek unit ? They are just a few miles down the road from me.
I am looking for optimal cooling as will be taking the beasty out to Namibia for a protracted sabbatical from work.
When I did the same with my Series 3 21/4 petrol fifteen years ago-had cooling problems in 40+ temps.

if the eltric fan isnt seized check the R4 fan relay swap it with another if this doesnt work ..disconect the fan and supply the fan with 12 volts just to rule out if the fan is working

i live in australia i have had 40 + days on end and i drive it hard. ... i have never over heated with the stander-ed viscous fan unfortunately like every viscous fan when they are locked in they do rob some slight power from the engine
 
The electric cooling fan has double purpose,for aircon and to help engine cooling at high coolant temps and to counteract heat soak ... as about replaceing the viscous fan with electric, i've been there, 3 failed attempts with different fans including Kenlowe and a big russian 400W one... i'm convinced now that when it's more than 30*C outside no electric fan is up to the job
