Aircon fan mod p38

There is a guy in New Zealand where it can get pretty hot running a P38 with the 3 litre M57 engine. He also runs without a viscous fan, it was fine except for heavy towing. A radiator upgrade fixed that.

Would love to know what he had to do to get an m57 lump in and working, it be a nice up grade.
 
Getting back to the original point, my p38 diesel started sounding like a jumbo jet every time I set off, even when fully warmed up.Also fuel consumption is down about 20% over the last year, so I def want to try the no viscous fan mod, if Datatek could please send details.

If you were to wire a adjustable stat to the black sender on the head ,would it bring up a warning on the dash when the aircon fans came on .......Just curious....:D

There are kits available online, you may have to drill bits or move things around. Datateks mod is best IMO if you want to go that route. Personally, if the cooling system is decent will cope in a desert no probs. @Mark Piercy has also done the mod.

My fan seized up would howl all time and gauge would creep up if stopped in traffic. Brian’s also howls like a tank. I fitted an E36 one for while which overcooled as was opposite direction. I stripped the original one and cleaned it up, hoped to change the fluid but it’s sealed and I didn’t want to tap/drill. Worked fine since

Aye your right ,but my ones a 2000,and i would like to test aircon fans ,and poss use them as backup cooling .....So would shorting black sender connector bring up a warning on the dash....
No the sensor switches the aircon fans on at around 105 degrees in an overheat situation. Too hot for general cooling. Overheat should show on temp gauge.

So if you changed the head switch ,(If thats possible ) for one that comes on 97 to100c or so ,why didnt L.R think of this o_O,,,,......So shorting the sender will test for seized fans,with no warnings....

Closing the circuit should bring the fans on if the circuit is normally open circuit. Maybe trying to turn the fans with probe trough the grille first would be a good precursor.

The fixed temperature sensor (where fitted) is not very accurate, you might be pushed to find one that operates reliably at 97/100C.
There are other ways of testing the fans, jumping the appropriate relay is the easiest. The fans operate at full or half speed for the aircon.
 
I've you want to test your aircon fans I'm sure I see somewhere that you can jump relays 13 and 14 do a search it's on here somewhere
