Hi all just striped my mates air suspension pump. I have stripped the electric motor apart and found that one of the brushes is worn a lot more than te other one and on closer inspection i can see the brush spring is rotted away. Commutator/ windings all check out ok. Any ideas where i could get replcement springs and brushes. Fairly confident that wabco wont sell me just these parts. Any help welcomed. Thanks in advance.

? new compressor is £200 plus... The coil conversion is £57+vat - plus a quick tweak on Testbook to reconfig the SLABS ecu.
Sorry, but when you look at the price of a compressor and the cost of air springs - it simply does not make sense to keep the SLS.As DII's get older it makes even more sense to convert to coils, most owners just wont spend the money for the very slight advantage that the SLS offers under certain conditions - most just want cheap reliability.

Christ didn't relise there that expensive , I see your point, big differance .

One of the main things about being a LR indy is to make sure that owners are going to get a deal that makes their car worth keeping - Make it too costly and they will either dump the car or trade it for a bloody Nissan ....

Tis why I got the p38, everything from r reg upwards parts still seem steep .

I just need to work out how to get to the captive nuts? If that's what they are, to stop them spinning so I can remove the compressor for under my Disco 2...

Diff.

As far as I know changing to springs is only half the story. I'm pretty sure you have to change the anti-roll bars as well to be fully compatible to springs, and I guess they are not cheap.

There are different bars for air or coil springs, but in reality nobody bothers.I even know of one local indy who just disables the ACE by just removing the pump and fitting an idler pulley, leaving the warning lamps etc on - its amazing what owners will tolerate if its cheap enough....

you can retrofit a tyre inflator instead of the original compressor with some small addaptions to the initial "hardware" , or measure the brushes and get something close then file them untill they fit, here you have various brushes(see the long list below) 20 Pcs 999021 Electric Motor Spring Carbon Brushes 1/5" x 1/5" x 29/64": Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools ... IMO dont ruin a well enhanced D2 just to make it cheaper to fix... sell it to somebody who likes it as it is and can afford to keep it then buy a D1 if you want coils and harsh cornerings...the SLS really makes the difference..just think to off-road mode, extended mode, self levelling when towing...etc ... a friend of mine fitted that Britpart sh*t and it lasted around 5000Km before one spring became shorter than the other`...and the car dragged it's back on the road with the caravan attached

If you do go down the spring route dont forget to tell your insurance company they do not like this type of modification been there done that and got the bill

My Disco is on springs but I'm gathering up the bits to go back to air using a second hand compressor and new airbags. Under 100k miles and rust free (I think) so will be better original. Each to their own I suppose.

Hi mate!
some of the posts on this thread are a bit mad!
All you need to do is replace the brushes.
Take the pump off and take it to the sort of peeps who repair electric motors, there is one near me in Wimborne who specialises in starter motors and alternators.
A brush is just a brush FFS!!!
Ditto with the spring.
Peeps like this

And here's a jokey one about how to do it.

and here's how to look for the bits, though you could just take the old, good, one off and get or make ones that match

Best of luck mate!

Sorry sierra, I read the top and the bottom of the thread, most unlike me, who normally reads them all the way through, so missed your post, before posting what I posted!!!!!
But agree with all you said about repairing the motor.
It does have to be one of the easiest repairs, even easier than than changing brake pads!
So good for you and I hope the OP finds what he needs and fits them!
:):):):):)

Incidentally, if air SLS was the holy grail of suspension on the D2, then they'd all have it.
My 5-seater came with coils and ACE as standard. It is fine and does tons of towing, up to the 3.5 tonnes.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
