What are the first steps to fix suspension. The car says suspension inactive stay under 30 and sometimes just suspension inactive.
The car will stay level even after a few days. It will drop to low no problem but takes a long time to get back up. I tried to go to high but couldn't make it. Whilst doing that it said vehicle rising slowly.
Should I buy a new compressor first or buy a code reader?
I have bought a new relay and I got a rebuild kit but I think I have the later Hitachi compressor.
Are eBay compressors any good?

Sounds like you need to start by finding the leak(s)
I'd start by checking the pipe to and from the tank and connection to the compressor. I'm sure someone with more expertise will be along soon

I fully take on board that there will be leaks somewhere and that is why the compressor is worn. I will be having a look as soon as it's stops raining. Today the compressor ran for a bit then stopped and it said suspension fault. I then turned the car off then on. The compressor then ran for a couple of seconds and it was ok, no fault. Is it worth fitting a new compressor now to help out because it's annoying with the bong of the suspension warning and I will fix leak asap?

Put a new compressor on with the leak still there and very soon you will need another new compressor.

A little update, I looked for leaks without removing any plastic from the underside , so not particularly thorough, bloody raining all the time, and all I found was a leak on the solenoid valve on the rear of the pump. I've stopped that leak and have completed two 10-15 mile journeys without any fault allerts. On the second journey the pump ran briefly on start up, is this normal?

Well this thread is a bun fight !!
Have you heard of the saying if you throw enough mud at the wall, some of it will stick ? :)
Compressor running briefly is normal, it is just making sure the reservoir is up to max pressure after standing.
After the usual hardware basics like battery etc, I would always be looking for RR diagnostics to give me a lead although not guaranteed.
