Hi all
I was driving the Range Rover today and pulled out in front of a lorry and acelerated away fast. Loud noise from under bonnet and then the car dies so I quickly pull out of way of the lorry on to hard shoulder. The car will start but immediatly dies again and again and again. I am suspecting the air flow meter but would like some opions before buying a new one Land Rover want £450 for an original or £250 for copy so need to make sure this is the problem before I buy. Is there a way of testing the airflow meter?

Thanks Craig P38 4.6 HSE 1995

hello mate i think you need to get a proper diagnosis on testbook or similar it`ll save you money in the long run, how do you know its not a failed fuel pump or even just the relay for the fuel pump you never know unless you get it checked first .

Well the bad news is that it is not the airflow meter but could be the flex plate that has shattered. When cold the car will now start but sounds like a bag of spanners but will not rev at all. It is being plugged in tomorrow so hopefully I will know then

Sounds just like what my car has been doing

see my entry on here titled Engine Backfire?? air filter

ive quoted my entry below let me know if this is the same problem
"Ive got a P38 R reg converted to single point LPG

Recently (seems to be more when its been raining) i'm getting a backfire or three from the engine bay. Then the car wont start or if it does it wont get above 300 revs.

The pipe behind the air mass meter has loosened or blown off completly, on this pipe is an aluminium tube with an aluminium flap / valve. The back fire has caused the flap/valve to blow through the wrong way & deform.

Ive bent the flap pushed it back through & reshaped it & the car then works fine until the next backfire & the whole thing is repeated.

Any one any ideas whats causing the backfire?
Any one know what the aluminium tube with flap/valve is actually called so i can get a new one?
Is it the fact that the flap is now deformed so it doesnt seal that is causing the backfire?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated."

Hurrah

My Range Rover is back on the road again. It turns out that one of the bolts holding the torque converter in place had come off smashing into the senser that reads from the flex plate and had also bent the teeth of the flex plate. The senser has been repaired, teeth straighten on the flex plate and the offending bolt removed ( in a mess ) and the other bolts checked ( one more was loose ) now back on the road again after the scare that the flex plate had been smashed and much bigger bill was expected. Thanks for all of your replys
