Hi. The clutch on my A/C pump has failed and I need to replace the pump. What I need to know is, if I replace the pump, remove the pump fuse so that the A/C dashboard switch cannot be activated in error, can I drive the vehicle straight to the garage to get the fluid filled up without damaging the new pump. My thought is that so long as the A/C clutch is not activated the pump itself would not be going round but just the pulley at the front driven by the timing belt which will be renewed at the same time. Thanks in advance

you are correct until clutch is activated pump wont turn, so no problem driving with ac off
Thanks for that. Jamesmartin. Another little point, when the pump arrived it was full of oil. I believe this is more than the measured amount that may be required. Presuming the current pump has had fluid loss due to the bearing heat up when the clutch went ping and therefore the amount within would not be the original required amount, how do I know what amount to drain from the new pump before fitting?

has it had a loss as you normally replace what you take out,put wont the garage flush the system and refill
Hmmm. I was under the impression there was oil in the pump other than the refrigeration fluid used for cooling. Perhaps I am wrong. The garage will empty and then top up the coolant fluid I'm sure. As for a loss, I think there might have been a small loss as the cooling has been becoming less effective over the last wee while but if any, it would just be a small amount as you would expect over a few years and having not been topped up for a while. It does get used quite a lot here.
