air con compressor? can it be used as air compressor?

ok first post on here hope a not opening a can of worms:)
my air con does not work not a prob dont use it anyway
question is if after removing pipes ( read with care as gas not good)
would it be possible after rewiring mag clutch to use as air compressor :D
sure i cant be first person to think of this?;)
if so any tips?

I can see what your getting at, the reason it wont work are as follows;

The ac pump does not flow enough cfm

It does not flow fast enough to be of any use

It requires a constant recirculating oil supply

The pump does not create pressure, the system is pressurised by a machine at fill up/service time, all the pump does is effectively push the compressed gas and oil around. The various components in the ac system create the low and high pressures required.


Good shout though, im sure there are ways of fixing a conventional air compressor into the space where the ac pump was, after all, the space is already used for hydraulic pumps, second alternators etc.

I have seen it discussed on here somewhere, i think an old fire extinguisher was used as the reservoir or an old scuba bottle, not a huge flow rate but when used in conjunction with a reservoir and some form of oiler Im pretty sure its been done.

y will air con keep it dry?
as most disco 1 mine leaks in top windows ohh and when its wading :eek:

it is a compressor that what it does ,ive seen a few used as air supplys ,most use a oil seperator to return oil to compressor on inlet side

hmm why do you think aircon compressor uses so much power when clutch is engaged
 
sounds like too much trouble and effort :doh:
think i will leave that idea and get on with front wheel bearing and drive belts this weekend
going to fit a rear locker anyway when i saved up so arb compressor will do job then:)
but if any one has info on it let me know

you could google it theres plenty of info on both :)
 
Because it has to move the compressed gas through the expansion orrifice which requires a fair bit of force. I wouldnt have thought it would have the speed to compress enough air into even a fire extinguisher size bottle. Hey, im willing to be proved wrong though.... Would be a handy tool to have on board.
 
Well begger me, I have just googled it and it does actualy look fairly straight foward to do, i stand humbled and corrected!

Seems there are good and bad models to use though.

heats absorbed when liquid expands into gas it gets heat through evaporater ,to get to liquid it needs compressing by compressor and a means of removing the heat ie condenser

Aircon also works to dehumidify the interior, should always be used on cars stuffed full of electronics, can stop a multitude of problems.

did not know that thought it just cooled the air
done some google work as well, looks like a lot of people have had this idea some with some success
but most have used a tank to store air in, that to much room for me just wanted to be able to blow tyres up
going to have a good look at this weekend and maybe get some bits will let you know how i get on:D
 
a fella i go laning with has his ex air-con pump as an on board air compresser and it does work....(well his set up does) its plumbed up to a scuba tank in the boot with a reg/guage to show the pressure ive, seen it working but how hes got it working is another question? hes a member on here, "big al from salford"
 
try using old air tanks from a leyland roadrunner 10litre tanks .
I have put together a pair with air pump from a vauxhall omega .pressure switch 12v
supply 20ltrs air tight 12volt perminant supply pressure control seems to work ok .
could mount the tanks inline if required :):)

any air brake tank from a hgv breaker will do the job or find someone selling a cheap ass 240v compressor and rob the tank it can be done ,some air-con compressors are better than others search you tube there is a few vids showing how to do it its not that hard my old Cherokee had it done not by me though it worked great from tyres but not superb for airtools the tank was an old lpg tank
