O.K. just had a ride in a AA truck!!:(
Heres the story,Went for a drive, on the way home could smell a horrible smoke. When i carefully opened the bonnet I found out the smoke was coming from my ac pump and smelt very clutchy.I guess my question is has my ac pump had it or is it reparable?:eek:

The compressor may have siezed and the smoke would be coming from the clutch. Have you had the a/c regassed recently? If so, they may not have put any oil in.
 
you said it smelt "clutchy" the aircon compressor has no aspestos or whatever is used, its a metal to metal contact. i doubt it would make that smell if slipping, just get bloody hot!! bet its internal, dam!
 
Probably burning paint, I haven't had the delight of messing with the compressor yet. Ive had the RR for about 4 weeks and always had the book symbol displayed, just not got round to diagnosing the problem. The clutch has never tried kicking in.
On a different subject, you have quite an impressive list of cars Redrange, I have a 1990 mk3 supra turbo been trying to sell though, And the wifes got a 1997 escort cabrio.

the rover cabriolet is the mrs's good fun in the summer though.
im wondering if this summer is down to us buying a convertible?
 
back to the ranger, theres a service buliten about concerning lack of voltage at the air con comp clutch, i did it on mine, fitted an aditional loom,fuse,relay and bits and adjusted the clutch and so far so good. good for a year infact so far, dont know if this is your prob but it may have been slipping because of it.

Slip the serpentine belt off the compressor pulley by using a socket on a long breaker bar for leverage on the belt tensioner, ther's a fair bit of spring force behind it looking into the engine from the front, turn to the right. Next, remove the white round plug from the compressor and put a 12volt temporary supply onto the compressor socket pins-this should pull the clutch in and turning the pulley should rotate the compressor shaft and pistons smoothly. If it feels "Rough" or siezed, the compressor is probably knackered. With the clutch disengaged there should be approx. .015" clearance at the clutch plate- does the pulley turn free disengaged? or does the bearing in the pulley feel "Lumpy?
If the system is low on gas, the book symbol will show on the HEVAC control and the compressor should not run. Oil is introduced into the system with the gas when recharged. Question is-where has the gas gone? common cause is failure of the Condenser (Radiator behind the grille with twin fans mounted). If your compressor is shot, drop me a PM as I have a serviced spare for the P38 4.6 GEMS and I am not looking for silly money for it.:) :) :)

Hello :D (little bit happier today)
O.K. good news and bad news! the good news is my compressor isn't knackered. It was the bearing for the pulley, However the bad news is everything got so hot the magnet has melted (hence the smoke).
So Ive stripped it all off with the compressor still on the RR, I need A new magnet,pulley,end plate,bearing and circlips if anyone can help please contact me asap, Cheers, Ian.:)
