I recently bought a 1998 P38 near Luton, HPI'd the car first and it all came back ok, plus it booked at £3,390.00.

It's a 2.5 DSE, and having owned it for 2 weeks now, i can say that it's got;

1: a wobble on the steering when you get to about 60 MPH.

2: a crack in the windscreen that used to be a chip until last week when it went sub zero for a few days :(

3: a small annoying oil leak.

15: Aaaaaaaaand a rear end that dips down to sea level after it's been left sitting for a day.

1 is probably the wheels being in need of a balance... 2 is a new screen... 3 is something for a mechanic to look at... which leaves 15.

I've been told that Dunlops are the best bags to get, however they seem to vary in price depending on where you go to get them... Sooooooo, where is the best place to get them?

1. Check the drop arm and track rod joints and tyre pressures.

3. check the leak off pipes, it might not be oil, it might be diesel. The other common oil leak is the cooler pipes.

Airbags will most likely need replacing, they have a 7/8 year design life. Easy job, cost about £260 to do all four.
Best bags IMO are Arnott Gen II's but Dunlop are fine and cheaper, look on Ebay or Island 4 x 4 or try Google.

+1 also check the FIP many on here have had to replace the seals including myself!

I'm not actually sure about what's wrong with the alternator...

I was reversing out of a parking bay when it stalled, which is a strange thing for an auto to do... It took about half a minute to start up again, and when it did, a message said gearbox fault.

The rev counter stopped working, as if it wasn't connected any more, and the engine idled at i'd say between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM, which is fairly high.

I got it into gear with a hefty jolt from the running gear, and it wouldn't go any faster if i put my foot down... just stayed at that high idle level.

A friend from work said it was the alternator, and having got the car home, when i started it up the following day, the revs were still high, but this time it did say alternator fault on the dash board.

It could need a replacement alternator... it could just need a few bits inside it, or as stated here, it could just be a wire that's come off.

Plus i'll need to get it off to find out which one it is, as apparently there are 3 to choose from, and if you choose un-wisely, the fault will still be there with the new but wrong alternator in place.

Can't afford a new one right now as crimble is upon us, and there are a couple of second hand ones on ebay... but again, even at 30 or 40 quid to get me out of trouble and back on the road... i can ill afford to get the wrong trousers Gromit :confused:

N.B.

For some reason, where i've said wrong trousers, it's turned green, and if you click it you get redirected to amazon for some wallace and gromit thing... WTF???? nothing to do with me, i was merely quoting them, not advertising them.

If you can DIY, better to spend your cash on a new diode pack and regulator. All your symptoms occur with low battery voltage.
 
Where could i get a diode pack and regulator from? and how would i check to make sure its defo the problem?

Don't really wanna buy spare parts if its not going to resolve the issue.

If the car says alternator fault, it usually is an alternator fault. Start the engine, put a voltmeter across the battery, it should read 14.2 volts at 2 k rpm after a couple of minutes.
There was arecent thread with part numbers but Ebay is your friend or Island 4 x 4. Second hand alternators are not a good bet, I bought one for my old MR2, it lasted 2 weeks! I couldn't overhaul it as the windings had gone.

i wouldn't say that ebay is my friend... more like a convenient acquaintance that isn't always THAT convenient !

I have more then 100 transactions buying or selling on Ebay, only had one problem with an item that did not turn up and Ebay refunded within a week.:)

Ive been useing ebay for 10-12 years with 2000+ buy and sells and yes ive been stung but only about 5 or 6 times so not bad odds
at least 3 of them were people claiming item wasent recived though! Dont know if item was recived or not but it happens!

OK....

belts... new units... second hand units... and one morphy richards goblin teasmaid (random)... but no diode and regulators on offer.

I tried range rover 2.5 diesel, Aaaaaaand bmw 2.5 diesel... with no joy :(
 
Mongo, the bay of E is fine, just choose wisely, or island 4x4 they are reasonable for price, but beware they love Britpart or as we say on here ****PART. and as I told you, your alternator is shot, listen to Keith, Datatek he diagnosed my shot alternator when I had my P38,he now diagnosis my L322 problems although Keith hates L322 s don't you Keith lol.
Mongo, don't beat about the bush, by a new alternator, oh and your sinking arse is your rear bags fooked, change now! Before you kill ya compressor. ;)
