I need a new battery for the disco tdi and found a few people recomending a visit to local agricultural supplies and getting a tractor battery that will fit the tray .Apparently you get a really good battery for best price.I live in Manchester so agricultural supplies are few and far between. Has anyone fitted one of these batteries and know where I could get one local ?

Sounds like a good idea. I'm gonna need a new one before winter, so looking forward to the replies on this.

Failing the agricultural one, any other cheap but good replacement battery suggestions would help too!

Ps, not hijacking your thread, just interested - sounds like a great idea!

As long as its got a high CCA rating and the poles fit your leads then go for it...lots of farming here so not a problem getting one...As for Manchester, erm, hmmm...

Oh yes...google is your friend!

I've just replaced my 9 year old battery from Car Batteries, Cheap Car Batteries, Replacement Car Batteries, Next Day Delivery from Perfomancebatteries.co.uk
Alphaline @ £67.45 and delivered next day, the best battery It's the best have ever had.
That looks a pretty good deal Discool. Ive had a word with a farmer friend up in Rochdale and he,s going to check it out and get back to me. You need a min 570 cca but the more the better.Apparently Costco do some great deals but you need a card or know someone with one to buy.

I've gotta pair of Halfords batteries, didn't buy them, just managed to end up with them after some swapping about various cars. No thefts were involved.

Anyway, I have one for engine and one for winch, and both have never gone flat after abuse.

I have had engine trouble recently and the other day spent about 4 hours trying to get it running, with a lot of cranking in between jobs.

I am very impressed that not once has it showed signs of flattening.

Not cheap at Halfords, bit just thought I'd give credit where it's due.

Cheers.

I don't know who make Halfords batterys now but my last battery that i have just replaced after 9 years was from Halfords manufactured by Lucas and cost £72 then.

Now Halfords want £93 for a similar battery or just over £100 for the premum one so my more powerful replacement at £67 + free delivery was a good deal, but we will have to see how long it lasts to know for sure. The original LR battery only lasted 4 years.

id be heading to euro car parts at trafford park, as them for the budget range and you will be paying less than £50 for a good battery that will last for years

Just for reference, an 072 battery is great for a disco.

It's the same size as an 065 I think, but higher capacity.

If you all already knew that, I'm sorry! :D

And as for ManBat, what gays!

I phoned the euro parts place that do them for £52 inc vat[own brand] but a bit dissapointed when he told me it was only 540 cca.Found another place in Rochdale Alpha batteries gave me a price £58.50 inc vat 600 cca 72 ah. Dont think thats too bad.I can pick up from there shop as I go up to Rochdale quite a bit to see friends.

Yeah I noticed that too, on further looking. It appears that the way Euro Car Parts checks fitment for various cars, is wrong (its been wrong on many other occasions for other parts I've tried to get from them, and eventually gave up in favour of GSF who are slightly better). So they're a bit naughty to list that headline price but offer only 540cca, instead of 570 or 600.

Alpha batteries are really good, I've used them before and nobody could match their price once specification is like-for-like. I emailed them and they've confirmed that a 334/250 upgrade should fit after checking:

072/089
£64.99
72AH, 600CCA
255L x 173W x 182H

334/250
£74.99
90AH, 800CCA
306L x 175W x 225H

A quick check under the bonnet suggests it would fit, but I'd need to adapt/replace the battery clamp so it reaches over the taller battery (the bonnet clearance should be okay though).

Anyone fitted this or another higher capacity, and if so, what type?

I think it should fit but to be sure you could always make a box out of cardboard to those dimensions and try it in the tray before you buy. You might need to adjust the fuse box to give more play.

278mm x 175mm x 190mm is the size of my new battery and it just fits, there is a small amount of clearance all the way round so leaving clearance for a wiring loom on the wing side and dosen't touch the oil cooler pipes on the rad side.

But I had to remove and reposition the front battery retaining rod by about 10mm as the new battery wouldn't fit with the rod in place, it's was just a matter of drilling a new hole in the battery tray and fitting the rod with a M6 nut on each side of the new hole.
Job Done.
