@andyfreelandy thank you.
I just cracked it :cool::):D
It is the axial position of the coil. Will make a ring on Monday so that it comes further out closer to the key.
I found out leaving the Hawkeye Pro connected and fiddling with the ring loosely in the air. All of a sudden it said key 2 recognised and all was well
:)

@admins.. how do I mark this a solved, to help others?
Here is the signal when it works.. if it ever happens to you!!
the blue line is the feedback from the coil, it looks the same with the engine running or off, hence it is a much weaker signal than one that is generated by a bigger distance.

Well done. Position of coil should be OK though. Is the chip in the key correctly? And is the key the right length? The black part of the key should be inside the coil when in the ignition. Glad you have sorted it and thanks for posting solution and waveforms to help others.

I have rooted around and found a plastic ring. The cowl around the ignition switch was broken and repair somehow which might have caused the problem. Then I saw on the v6 that there is a luminous ring which wasn't on the TD4... Yes, that may well change the position!
Well on Monday I'll be back to put it all together nicely !

Add SOLVED to the start or end of the title.

What were the error codes you found?

The EDC said immobilizer timeout.
One classic example for unhelpful codes. I usually don't like working with codes, here it was the EWS life value of the key and more importantly the USB oscilloscope that solved it.

My worst nightmare ever.
Car worked perfectly for 2 days and this morning the client called me to say car doesn't start
I suspected low battery etc but now the key is again not recognised.
No matter what I do it is playing silly bugger.
There are only 2 keys programmed so I am at a loss what to do.
Does anybody have experience with the AK90?
It is a programmer for BMW EWS and keys

If it did work and you found a problem with the coil I'd start there. Is the coil damaged or loose. Does putting the head of a coded key in the coil provide the right output? I can't think the key can 'unprogram' itself.

I tried another coil and it made no difference whatsoever.
Tried another, wrong key matching the old EWS and had the same input as from the 'right key'.
This was with both coils.

The only thing which might shed some light is that the client played with the remote. I had never done that, it looked highly suspicious , with missing buttons. So I couldn't have dreamt anybody used it but as a key hanger.

Another weird thing is that I can't access the CCU. But then, again, this does not influence the immobilizer.
