hi guys looking for advice as it seems that my father in law may have been ripped off, he owns a freelander td4 2006 plate, mechanic claims to have replaced the clutch, now when he drives if massive judder when pulling away in 1st, gets a clicking noise when changes gear and gear leaver loose as hell. Work done just over a year ago and any thoughts on faults so I can get it repaired for him

He is a pensioner and hate seeing him like this.

Car has had the drive shaft removed and drives as a two wheel drive

clutch judder can be down to wear and damp weather my fresh sacs clutch in my A6 does judder a small bit now and then, and a cheap one i fitted to a passat was really bad on wet days. guessing he didn't get the clutch changed for the craic and was happy at the time the problem was fixed?
does he drive with his hand on the gear stick?

I don't know about the clicking noise but I bought a freelander that had had a recent clutch change and it had a judder on take off too. I never investigated it, instead I just adapted my driving style to allow for it. I found I needed to increase the revs slightly before the clutch bite point. If all has been well with your father in laws car for about a year, I doubt if the garage ripped him off. Maybe a bit of oil is leaking onto the friction plate or summat.

Hi thank you for the reply, he got the clutch replaced as the pedal was fully down on the floor and wouldn't lift back up, surely a clutch should last longer than 12 months I have read it could be engine mounts?totally scratching my head
. I am thinking it is the gear linkage is done causing the lever to be so loose after reading some posts on the forum but what would cause the clicking noise?

Does the clicking noise happen when the engine is switched off and where does it seem to come from. Probably a loose linkage also probably not much to worry about. Does the lever feel not by as the click happens?

The life of a clutch largely depends on the driving style of the operator. I think in most cases, for the average driver not towing caravans much a clutch should last between 75k and 100k, more for a good driver, less for a bad driver or a car used by learners.

lol, so basically you have 3 new problems on an old car. And are wanting to blame some work done a year ago as the primary cause.....

TD4 is reknown for wobbly gearstick. So probably unrelated.

Yeh, you would hope that a clutch would last a long time without issues, but if its run OK for best part of a year, then I wouldn't put to much blame at the hands of the garage that fitted it.

My clutch judders like crazy and I to have adjusted by lifting the revs slightly before engaging it. I'm sure its the original 20 year old clutch (I've owned the car 10 years) but it still holds perfectly well with no slippage at all. I'm not sure why it judders, it may be oil as there's a lot of oil all over my engine/box or could be from when I burnt the clutch maneuvering a (overly) heavy trailer.

I believe there are kits you can get to restore the gear linkage. Its not uncommon for it to become loose/floppy.

Clutch judder is actually very common. Our 2018 Mazda CX5 judders first time it's driven in the morning, which started once it had done about 20k miles. Before that the Ford Kuga started juddering at about 30k, again first thing in the morning.
Before that, our Vauxhall Astra GTC started juddering from a year old, but only did it when we were stuck in stop-start traffic.

Judder is very common, and normally down to the plate sticking to the input shaft splines.
