Advice on Tyre choice please!

Hey guys,

Looking to replace my tyres with something new. I've got a set of new wolf wheels sat waiting for some rubber.

I'm currently running 235 85 16 AT's which are sat on freestyle alloys (on a 110, not load rated for it, which is why I have the wolfs).

My current choice is Toyo Open Counrty MT's, but I'm thinking of going to 255/85/16. Would I need a lift for this? Looks like about another inch, maybe inch and a half of height in the tyre?

Are they standard offset Wolf rims or the ET00 ones?

Chances are they won’t rub. But a lift probably wouldn’t be the answer anyway as under suspension compression all the lift would vanish.

The Toyo is a good all round tyre. But not the best MT. Very limited choice in 255/85

235/85 and 7.50 x 16 also a good fit for these rims. 265 is generally beyond the published specs.

The 255's are almost 1.5" larger (should give about 30mm of lift).

I'd stick with the 235's.

Thanks, she's every bit as clunky as the rest of them but I absolutely love her to bits. She's going to cost me a fortune...

They're ET20, but currently, she has 30mm spacers. I don't want to go wide as she handles very well, I don't want to compromise that if it's avoidable. I just wanted a slightly bigger diameter...just for looks. But if it comes at a cost I'll stick with 235's.

255's I thought were only a smidge wider but have a larger diameter (255/85) so I thought maybe these would work without the need for a lift.

With the spacers they might rub the inner rear wheel spat under flex. But as said, a lift probably wouldn’t solve this unless you limit flex.

They might also rub the front radius arms under lock. However lots of people run this size or similar. Some will say no rubbing others do have some. My Uncle has some Wolf style 8 x 16 rims with ET00 off set and BFG KM3 MTs in 255/85, looks great and no probs on road. But they do rub a little off road.

It’s a percentage of the numbers so 85 wotsits of 255 is more than 235.

You will also need to check the tyre manufactures specifications for the rim width. Wolf wheels are only 6.5" width which I know can take a 235 width tyre but cannot take a 265 width tyre (according to manufacture spec, not can you physically fit one!). I am not sure about 255 so you would need to confirm but you might find the wolf wheels are narrower than the minimum width requirement.

235 and 255 are the width in mm. So a 235 tyre is 235mm wide.
The 55 or the 85 is the height of the tyre from the rim as a percentage of the width.

A 200/50R10 means a 200mm wide tyre that has a 100mm (50% of 200) sidewall that fits a 16" rim.
Yes we are mixing it up, width and height is in mm and rim size in inches.

So a 235/85 is 235mm wide and 200mm tall and 255/85 is 255mm wide and 217mm tall (17mm taller and 20mm wider)

The 85 is a percentage of the width...so the 255 being slightly wider means the diameter is slightly larger also. That's my understanding of it anyway, happy to be corrected anyone?
