Hi

I'm looking for a used Defender (dream car!) for about £3000.

Doesn't need to be comfortable, just reliable.

Any advice? What should I avoid?

Thanks!

Have a good look at the chasis, especially the outriggers, if they appear fairly non existant then you may be in for some replacments in the near future.

Get a diesel, the engine should then give you less trouble and be easier to sort out.

Check the bulkhead, from inside the engine bay and outside just below where it meets the windscreen.

Check out both gearboxes, and drive on them both.

When you do get it, get the timing belt replaced

Very Wise wordes from the Discomania!

I would add that you make sure that the engine is cold when you get to a possible purhase and watch for smoke when you start it! white = Bad and a bit of black = kind of normalas long as it is not excessive

I would suggest at £3k you will not get into a TDI which is a shame as they massively outperform the others

2.5NA diesel is pretty bullet proof and very reliable if wll maintained (Discomanias point re- Cam belt) but they are hellishly slow!

2.5 Turbo diesel has more pulling power (more Torque rather than speed ) but they can be quite unreliable

My choice would be 2.5NA diesel every time, just keep away from the hills! the nice thing is you always have a clear road ahead of you as everything else is stuck behind you

Good Luck!

^^^^ Decent advice from the guys above.

Don't buy the first one you see - shop around.

Where in Essex are you?

The 2.5 TD engine is ok if you find a decent one that has had an easy life, and are very careful with it. It needs very frequent oil changes, and needs to be pampered to last. I am the second owner of mine, which has done 150,000 without major work apart from a busted turbo which was replaced under warrant in 1990 but has never gone above 60mph ever (narrow rural roads)

The 200tdi (if you can find one) or the 2.5NA are much better, and can be treated relatively roughly with few problems. Though the 2.5 NA won't do much more than 65mph
