I have a 98 HSE and have been having issues with the ac. It will read 0 degrees in the summer, then much higher in the winter???? After driving a while, it seems to gradually get to reg temp then the system works fine. I'm getting tired of the heater in the summer and ac in the winter. I've search around for info and have found some stuff about the abmbient temp sensor, but I cannot find it's location in my truck. Is this a common fault?

On models up to VIN 381430 it's in one of the air intake plenums by the winscreen wipers. From 381431 it's behind the front bumper valance by the radiator. Unless the veicle is travelling at more than 15 mph all outputs from the sensor will be ignored for feedback purposes by the HEVAC ecu

The output cable for the sensor plugs into the back of the HEVAC unit. From a cost point of view, the sensor is a lot cheaper to replace than the HEVAC panel. Diagnostics should show up a faulty sensor. Do you have the "Cheque Book" symbol showing on the HEVAC in the bottom corner?? Usually a lot of people upon having a fault in the Climate Control jump the gun and shell out around £150 for a new panel when it's a fault somewhere else. If there's no book symbol-go for the sensor first-it's the cheaper option

The sensors are made to cope with exterior much as they have dust and rain etc. going over them especially if they are located at the front of the car behind the bumper. Could be a dirty connection maybe-locate the sensor, pull the plug off and have a look give it a spray of WD40 before plugging it back. Could be a poor connection where it plugs into the rear of the HEVAC but I doubt it.
The HEVAC goes through a self check when it's powered up and will clear minor faults. If it's clear most times you don't have a serious problem, it's when the book is there all the time that it's spend,spend time.
