Hmm, that fix didn't last very long. the ABS Fault and Traction Failure lights popped on today as I was driving. Not accompanied by the ABS judder that was previously apparent.

To round this post off I have refitted the original ABS sensor now. No further problems. Pity the cheap ebay sensors caused a bit of confusion.

After a couple of months this fault has re appeared. Usually about two miles into a journey, but also occasionally the fault doesn't appear at all. It can happen when driving or, strangely, when stationary. It can come with no warning, or sometimes there is a loud chattering from behind the dashboard instrument panel area, sounds like a relay switching rapidly, then the ABS and Traction Control lamps come on.
Any advice on where to start with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Kenny

Guess what is behind the facia instrument panel area? ABS ECU.

Have you tried cleaning the connections in the big round connector with the rubber boot, under the ABS pump?

I had similar symptoms with some randomly odd diagnostics - turned out to be that connector which had got hot coolant dumped on it during an overheat before I bought the car (overflow pipe was missing). Connections looked a bit tarnished. Seems to have fixed it for now (6 months and counting - crosses fingers...)

Not just me with ebay ABS sensors then? Mine failed after a few weeks. One from Island 4x4 was fine - and only a few quid more.

I had similar problems with my 1997 4.6 p38 after allsorts of diagnostics checking and process of elimination it turned out to be the abs pressure switch, the green coloured switch attached to the abs pump.
I bought a second hand pump unit with switch attached and hey presto no more abs faults.

Im still befuddled by the ABS fault. When I remove the front left sensor from its socket and let it hang lose the ABS fault doesn't come on, but the Traction faulure message does.
Plug it back in and the ABS fault message returns, followed by the Traction message a few seconds after turning on the ignition, without starting the engine.
Any ideas?

Duff sensor? Without diagnostics, it's all guess work.
