I'm new here and about to buy my first freelander, a 1.8 from around 2000. I've had a click around the forum and its great to find loads of useful info'. Two questions though,

Is there anywhere that pulls together all the hints and tips for what to check when buying?

Is it possible to fit bigger diameter and width wheels/tyres to a Freelander? It looks as though there's room but has anyone done it? (Clearly speedo reading goes awol with different diameter wheels but I can deal with that. Same diameter for all 4 wheels so no FWD complications.)

Yes, I've read up on the head gasket but there's hundreds of 1.8s for sale at sensible prices and there seem to be loads of people on the forum saying the majority of vehicles haven't had a problem.

IF the 1.8 is so frowned upon, which is the better engine option?

TD4s seem to be the preffered option. If you get the latest edition of land Rover Owner theres a quick guide to buying freelanders on page 175. main problems seem to be head gaskets on 1.8 and viscous drive coupling on all of them.

Thanks for the tips! I've been out and about looking at cars today and diesels seem to be thin on the ground and quite a bit more £££. Will persevere though.

It's the 3 door models which look best for my use. Most of what I've seen are Hardbacks some with the roof rails and some without.

In terms of wheels 16" and 17" seem most popular and 18" decidedly rare.

I seem to remember to have read on another forum that 1.8 petrol engines are "more or less" allright if not driven for short trips all the time, the construction of the engine makes that the thermostat opens too late which makes the head becomes too warm during short trips (the complete cooling capacity not used) resulting in HGF's.
