Looks really good mate can't wait to see it all done
Hello, I'm new here & I'm in the process of looking for a LR90/early defender 90 that, given what I have to spend, may need much more work than you've needed to do on this.
This thread has been really helpful as it has given me an idea of what things should look like etc, & it has given me more confidence to take on a project. I also now know who to ask when I need information on how part 'x' is removed/refitted etc ;-D
Regarding the paintwork; I think you've done a very good job, I've worked with people who couldn't paint as good & they were on a payroll! I did notice some misses here & there in obvious places but you could alleviate this in future by going round the areas that are hard to get & striping them up using a roller/brush or even the gun on a lower paint/air/fan setting, & spraying using the spot fan helps. You just need to colour them ready for the second coat so not aiming for a wet coat first go.
Also, once you've done, get someone to look over it as as you've been painting a certain colour for a while, your eyes become accustomed to the colour & low/missed spots become less apparent.
I do have one question for you regarding the chassis; Did you consider/get quotes for getting it blasted (after repairs)?
Edit* I forgot to add; for the miss under the lip on the bulkhead, in future loosen your air cap & turn the 2 prongs vertical & tighten up as normal, so the fan is horizontal rather than vertical.
Although I am pretty happy with the finish bearing in mind I've never even been shown how to set a gun up, Every thing is self taught.
Getting there mate what you going to do when is complete?
Don't be fooled by what he says regarding the paint, the whole job is first class and looks even better in person.
No runs, no orange peel just a solid and efficient job!!!
Don't get me wrong you have done a very good job, there were just some missed bits here & there on the chassis. I only said obvious as I'm a painter myself & I suppose I just knew where to look, hard to reach areas etc. Go round beforehand with the gun on lower settings (or roller/brush) & just colouring those hard to reach areas, then a tie & wet coat all over.
I have £1500 to spend so far, hence why I'll be getting something that needs a fair bit of work, although I have seen some nice ones go for £1300-1400+ on eBay. I just didn't have that at the time.
I'm sorry if I sounded a bit brash at first, the work you did on the panels & axles etc were top notch. For some one who is a painter to say I have done a good job is vary pleasing for me, I'm extremely hard on my self so thanks for the positive comments .
You should have a data sheet with your paints that'll give you that information. Most can be applied by spray gun, roller & brush but obviously check the data sheet. I've brush/rolled all sorts of two pack paints; epoxies, poly/urethanes, glass flake, acrylics, zinc phosphates / zinc rich (apply lightly), cellulose etc, but only in parts that are inaccessible with the gun/areas that'll cause build up on surrounding faces/edges if sprayed. You mention using a brush / roller. Can you apply 2k paint with that method?.
How much was the vehicle & how much have you had to spend on it, minus your labour? With that sort of budget I suppose it depends how much of the work you can do your self, I've done absolutely every thing my self. So has kept the costs down a bit.

No worries I understood what you meant, And didn't take it to heart
Will be touching the chassis up when its all finished so will do all the bits I've missed

Ah fair enough will check that out and see what it says

Vehicle was originally £2200 which in all honesty was to much.
It was ****ing it down when I went to view it so didn't look as closely as I usually would It had 12 months test on it so thought "Ah there cant be that much wrong with it" How wrong was I
As for cost so far I haven't added it up recently but will do so when its finished. Recon it will be around £700 - £800
Although I have sold a few bits to recoup some money.
Mechanically, brakes & gearbox I'll most likely have to get my friends who know more than I to help, although hoping to get a good runner :-D. I'll blast/repair/paint the chassis/parts myself & can galvanise/plate/anodise/powder coat/metal spray if needed so will save a lot on that front, it'll just be my own labour & guessing a lot of it given what I have to spend :-D.
Sounds like you can do most of the work your self, I'd rather try and teach my self how to do some thing before paying some one else to do it,
So I cleaned the inside out

And fitted all the interior, Who would have thought it, Carpets in a defender

And got the wings painted, apologies for the crap pictures, It was getting dark when I came in.

Grill and headlight surrounds I bought, Both bearmach so you would think they can get the finish the same
Recon Ill have to paint them or they're going to look daft?

Blimey Aaron are they purple or are my eyes just very bad I think they would suite your colour in a close black
Think it's the picture making them look that colour. They're actually a textured matt finish where as the grill is smooth and shinny.
Got loads of gloss black in the garage so recon that's what I'm going to do
The interior looks really nice, I think the original black interior is the best. I hope to get the same but with the third seat.
Re: your new grill & headlight plates; I think it may have been done to differentiate between each part. I checked some defenders grills/HL plates & most of them have a slightly different colour for those parts. Some are quite hard to distinguish but you'll notice a slight change in shade or gloss level. I reckon they'd look good as they are...if you like the colour purple? I'd personally paint them a matt silver metallic with a darker silver/grey grill maybe, definitely 2 different shades/colours.
I fitted a set from Paddocks that came in blue boxes, the grill is smooth black and the headlights surrounds are textured.
