Thanks Danny, disco wasn't that bad actually, better than I expected it to be, I'd have tried selling some more bits off it but I was sick of all the messer's after a week, even when it was free, dealt with a couple of decent people, the rest where idiots. Glad it's gone to be honest.

Gaskets, well last time when I did the 200tdi I used Turner engineering for the bottom end set as they could supply a victor reinz set, everywhere else I could only find the almakes/britpart/bearmach standard sets, and from my experience of them, they aren't great, very thin, paper thin compared to the victor reinz ones.
The top end I bought an elring set, which I think I sourced via lr direct.

Now this one, the 300tdi, I again sourced via lr direct, by part number and was able to get payen and elring gasket sets, both good quality and very happy with them.

So I'm not really sure which brands are available when it comes to the td5, although my brothers td5 needs a head gasket and was looking at gasket sets the other day. Turners don't say which brand theirs are, and via the usual parts places I can only find britpart, (in a set that is) Maybe Turners are just supplying britpart sets, who knows.
Probably doesn't help you, and have been wondering what to do myself.

I know it's a mine field isn't it. I don't want to spend all the time and hassle of rebuilding it whilst it's out on the bench only 6 months later have things start failing.

Well, still naff all done, the second donor discovery I bought is now being used as a mobile shed as I sort through all my crap, well I suppose it saves moving it all into a vehicle on the day of the move, and is now pretty much sat on it's bump stops. Oops :oops:
Ordered a few more bits and bobs, mainly stuff so I can get jobs buttoned up and finished, so fuel lines, the one that goes to the filter on the wing on the 300tdi so I can relocate it to the proper place. Set of new oil cooler pipes, and a set of coolant hoses.
Will order a set of intercooler pipes shortly too.
Not that they are much use without a rad frame, which needs sending for galv and hasn't been done yet.
Need to ring them tomorrow and see what I can sort.
Also been a bit sad and wrapped all my pedal boxes up in bubble wrap and put them in a box ready for the move, because I'm not going to get to the stage of, bulkhead sent for galv, bulkhead back, prep, prime and paint and fit them all prior to then, even if that is what I would have liked to happen.
Anyway, back to work tomorrow, boo!..

Maybe it's just me, I have no faith, and to be honest bloody hate going to places like that, and is well out of the comfort zone.

No, I'm the same.
To be fair to the place I use, the first time I called for a quote the guy said 'when you drop the stuff off, leave a list of the parts too'. I presume because things can drop off the wires in to the bath or get mixed up with other batches of parts. Having said that, nothing has gone astray yet. But, as you say, it is a bit of a worry!
 
I'm a bit of a Landy lurker on this forum and don't post allot

In my years as a mechanic I was a teck for a landrover main dealer ship for 8 years ( left last year to work on vintage jags and alfas because I didn't like how main dealers treated ther imployees

Any way , I no a bit or to about Landys from proper ones up to the ones with more ecus than you can shake a stick at, and I'd like to say the work your doing even down to each bolt being clean is very inspiring I wish everyone that picked up a spanner had the same enthusiasm you do to do a job right when working on a vehicle especially being on my favourite a defender

Keep up the good work me and I'm sure the rest of the forum will be watching and enjoying and of course steeling ideas for are own builds

Well as has been the case for the last month not a lot has been happening really. I had a day last weekend just tinkering about tidying odd bits up, the tub is bolted on temporary, put a spare bulkhead I had on, fitted steering column and wheel and connected up to steering box. Should help with pushing it onto the new drive.
May even bolt a seat box and seat in too, but we'll see how I am time wise.
Started on the fuel pipes, but I didn't think that through! I had planned to use the pipes that came off (200tdi) Cleaned them all up and then it hit me, erm... I bet these aren't going to be long enough. (200tdi sits back to the bulkhead, whereas the 300tdi sits right forwards)
I tried anyway, but nope, a little too stretched for my liking. Doh! Anyway, I'll just buy some 8mm id (I think) nylon tubing and make some myself while still looking original ish.

Still don't know what is happening ref moving, they're dragging it out that's for sure!
So this weekend has just been organising yet more stuff, I think I'm at the stage now where it is as good as it is ever going to be for moving.
I've spent £200+ on some heavy duty storage boxes just to try and organise it all, and to be fair it has worked well, instead of having random stuff in random boxes,
Hope to be hearing and doing something this week, it's doing my head in now and just want to get it over and done with.
 
These things can drag on at the best of times. Over Christmas is possibly the worst time, but hopefully things will start to get a wiggle on for you now. At least the uncertainty and delay has been over the winter when the weather's not so good!

Wow, thank-you for your kind comments, I do try and make things as good as I can, sometimes it is difficult or time consuming, but you just have to make do with what you have available.

Aye that was the plan and why I didn't mind too much about buying them.

Fuel feed is 8mm, return is 6mm.

So a little update, as most of you know I am meant to be moving house, early this week a date for moving was set, Friday the 20th (today) so I got Thursday off work and spent the day emptying the entire contents of both sheds, all down to the drive ready to go straight in a van, 4:30 comes and a phone call from the solicitor, apparently because we are buying off someone who is deceased and has been handed over, someone else needed to sign also, they couldn't get hold of said person and has now basically all fell apart at the last hurdle, the buyer of ours is not happy and says he is pulling out.
So god knows what is happening, whether or not is still going through I have no idea, it is a bloody farce, not a happy chappy myself, you have you life packed up in boxes and then it all falls apart. Great!
I suppose if one thing, it has made me have a major tidy out :oops:

Anyway, on a happier note, I made the most of having today off and went and collected my stuff from galvanising :)

And I'm sure some of you can remember last time I had some done and they lost my rear door frame.
Well I pulled round to the loading bay, got out to try and find my pallet (pallets) soon spotted the bulkhead and thought I recognise that door sat on top of them, so I was bloody chuffed about that too :)
Was also the slam pannel stays tie-wrapped to it too as they lost them aswell.
Although I sent a set of slam pannel stays this time and they have lost one this time aswell, doh.. But oh well, these things happen, least I've got one pair.

I do like all that galvanised stuff, :)... and I'm trying to think of an appropriate collective noun... you know... like a "murmuration of starlings" etc., but can't (!) - so, apart from the obvious....
