Following serious (and dangerous) loss of power below 2000rpm on my Freelander 1 it was evident from most of the forum entries that the MAF sensor could be past it's best. The obvious thing was to remove the air filter cover and disconnect the sensor plug.
Firstly I had to spend 30 minutes vacuuming up the hazelnut debris from a winter mouse feast (no wonder we don't have any hazelnuts for ourselves), there must have been a couple of pounds of nutshells.. Having finished this it took a little while to locate the 5th Allen screw for the air filter cover and, behold, a mouse nest in the air filter, piles of leaves and chewed polyester fibre. Luckily the b.....s hadn't got through the paper section!
For now I cleaned the filter and wrapped it in nylon mesh. The mice must have crawled all the way though the air intake to get there and I thought there was a coarse mesh over the entry port to prevent this sort of thing. Please advise.
We do have a small dog who likes swallowing complete mice while they're still alive but he'll have to do better!
Anyway, on disconnecting the sensor the vehicle takes off like a rocket, horizontally of course, so that will be fixed soon.
