A silly problem but...

Just had to replace the clock bulb and having checked through all the threads there seemed to be two methods. One was to use two credit cards to release the catches and just pull out the clock, the other was to remove the ashtray/cup holder/coin tray assembly and drop the clock down.
Turns out the second method only works if someone has removed the lower latch support but while trying this out I got all annoyed at the ashtray/coin tray since they did not open under spring power and needed to be pulled open. Looking at the setup once removed, there seems to be a cog acting as drag to stop them simply firing out into the rear seats but this is very high resistance. Anyone know how I could sort this? I did try WD40 etc in the hope it was just gunked up but several hours later they are still the same. Thinking now I might just remove them..

Ah, that's a little embarrassing....

Next time I must remember to check the whole unit before going public. The cog thingies are working as intended, what is NOT however is the springs since the bits of plastic they should lock against to provide tension are both broken off so not enough oomph to overcome the cogs.

Cogs now removed and put in a safe place until I can work out how best to re-tension the springs

Probably could but realistically it's not a critical component so I might just leave it as is (no cogs/weak spring) until I can think of an effective repair. If I get there I will post it in case anyone else has the same silly issue.
