Just turned 50 and travelling to Scotland on Saturday. I've bought my first 4x4 (Defender 90). I've never even driven one before, in fact I was only told yesterday by someone that they're noisy, uncomfortable, not a smooth ride, thus avoid travelling in excess of 70 MPH on the motorway. I've just always wanted one, and I'm looking forward to doing mudless, fluffy things with it, like pretending I'm one of the lads, fell-walking in a wax-oiled coat with my three border collies in tow, accessorising my wagon and polishing it with my man-sized pink feather duster at the weekends. What do y'all think about that then?

Best keep below 40mph ont motorway or it will fall apart.

Yer need to take someone with yer who knows what they're looking at. Too many are modded badly or are a pile of hidden rust.

I'm hoping it's alright. I spoke to the land rover garage. 17 k spent on it. Just passed MOT yesterday. Chap decided not to put galvanised back door on and a bit of bubbling due to oxidisation, but new everything. It was on Ebay recently. I hope it's OK anyway. Looked on DVLA MOTs and HPI. I want to put steps on it, maybe side windows, 1992 defender decal and maybe change wheels back to painted rim ones/ roofrack, then maybe an alarm and that's about it I think?

Oh No!!!! What am I doing??? My childhood bogie with Silvercross wheels attached underneath a plank with U nails steered with a washing line was a smoother ride than that!! The steering wheel and gear stick must've been loose on that Landy, surely? If not, I'll get used to it. The speed awareness course explained that if I go 90 MPH from Preston to the Lakes, I only get there 8 minutes earlier than if I went 70 anyway. I wonder if that means I'll only be 15 minutes late in a landy? Time I lost the racing Zebedee psychology and morphed into Dylan anyway. Whether I'll ever feel fun and excitement rather than sheer anxiety and stress doing a green lane is another matter. Seriously, thanks for that. It's best I'm prepared for a sore arse and arms when I get home Saturday afternoon :eek::eek::eek:.
