I've tried the search but got nowhere, could well be me not entering the correct words so i'm here on the ponce for answers if poss :)

There's a leccy burning smell from around the drivers side dash on me disco and the battery is dieing over night (fitted a discarnect to the neg terminal on the battrey to semi sort this problem), is there a well known area to check out before i remove the fuse box, cig lighter, ign switch wiring ect ?
It smells to me like there's a dirty connection and it's overheating to me (smells the same as transits do when thier ign switch multiplug starts to melt).
I want to fit a 2nd battery where is the normal place for it? passenger side where (i assume, cos it aint actually got one) the jack normaly goes?
I have all the bits from me written off recovery truck (cables, batterys ect) to do the job just wonder if there was preferd place or sumink ?

I have to say coming from a Di transit XLWB the old disco don't half move in comparrison  acceloration measured by the second hand NOT the minuite hand is rather strange to me :D
Not been off road yet but it certainly eats all the speed humps round my way

Check engine to chassis earth. If these fail the car tries to use the handbrake as an earth cable and melts half the wiring harness in the process. If this isn't the problem then the light/indicator stalks have an habit of melting.

Cheers i'm into it tomorrow so when i find the problem i'll let ya know :)
Is the switch gear the same as LDV400 cos i have some in the garage ?

Right done all the earths all taken off cleaned and replaced and 2 extra one put on between the engine and battery and and engine and chassis just to make sure.
The smell is still there but the old nose has narrowed it down to the fuse box and or wiper switch, i've removed the wiper switch so now just the fuse box smells, i have noticed it has those cheapo 99p store fuses so tomorrow i'm gonna replave the lot with decent ones.
Is there an online diagram of what fuse does what? i tried the search but couldn't find owt about the actuall fuse positons  mu cover is missing
Is there any usuall susspects for the fuse box being a bit stinky? the wipers have packed up so it may be a seized motor making the smell at the switch but now that disconected it shouldn't cause the fuse box to overheat any more?
I'm fine with leccy stuff but wanted to check with the experts if there was a usuall susspect?
cheers for bearing with me :D

I had a problem with my electrics a couple of weeks back which turned out to be a broken fusible link, yours could be barely connecting causing them to arc hence burning smell. When I examined mine I found the crimps so badly corroded I was suprised it took so long to go. The links are in an expanded sleeve around the battery feed cable to the bulkhead located next to the servo. You will have to undo the cable clips and tape around the harness then slide the pouch forward toward the battery, suggest diconnecting the battery first. I soldered the cables as I didn't have the right crimps. If the links cables are very bad you will need to go to an auto electrician to get the right cable as they are 10 Amp rated lengths.

Cheers for that but i've found the problem :D
Siezed wiper mech, that caused the motor to burn out which in turn was causing the smell at the fuse box and switch, the relays are still clicking and supplying the feed to the motor so i guess the switch is ok although i did plug it in to test, unpluged it to give it a sniff and burnt me top lip on a hot contact  DOH
duck-1 pillock-0
Any tips on unsiezing the mech or is it just easyer to replace em both?
watching one near me for a fiver on T' bay of evil so will porbably just change the pair.

First time really working on a LR and i rather renjoyed it TBH, nice and easy access, simple to work out what's what BUT i havn't had to get at the heater motor yet (fortunatly it works fine on all speeds) :D
Also discoverd i have a steering gaurd, yes one lump on the back of me head in the shape of the 4WD logo cut into it been a good day but now i need some medical help to get over it :pound:
I must say working on a cortina is waay easyer on the old bonce (and lips)

now you mention it, that brings back memories! mark 1 cortina 1600GT, every spare moment keeping it on the road, just like the disco.lol:D

The rust at the same speed (mach 1), both have oval badges, mechanicly simple but strong, i see a pattern emerging
Actually they handle pretty much the same (QE2) :D
