Right then the saving for my Landy project has been going well :) and I am going to go and have a look at an exmilitary 24 volt lwb series 3 over the weekend but there are a couple of things im not sure about and I was hoping you good folks might help!

It's unregistered and the chap doesn't have the military release papers so where abouts will I find the vin plate so I could get the history of the vehicle?

Are 24 volt motors ok to use or would it be more trouble than its worth? (I drive artics for a living so have a rough idea but is it different/more trouble on an older car?)

It has some sort of built in extra piping and heater between the seats (will get a pic as soon as I look at it) any ideas what that could be for on a military vehicle?

Any other advice before I plunge in and have a look?

The chap is looking in the region of £500 but I wont be paying that lol it really will need some work doing to it but it was a project I wanted so I could build from the ground up!

24 volt spares (alternators/starter/relays/bulbs etc) will be harder to get hold of (+ more expensive), extra pipes are part of the artic heater kit and could be removed.

The Series 3 Land Rover has many Identification numbers stamped about the vehicle. Although these aren’t really required when ordering parts it is important to know what components are fitted to your vehicle in case they have been changed at some point in its life. For example if you wanted a front inner hub bearing for your 1975 Series 3 but someone in the past had exchanged the front axle from one off a 1971 model then you might end up with the incorrect part as the bearing changed spec in 1972!

to the bulkhead inside the engine bay. Don’t be alarmed if the plate reads BL Cars as these were used up to approximately 1981. The number was also stamped into the right hand side chassis rail just behind the front bumper, and above the spring hanger. If your chassis has been replaced then the old number ‘SHOULD’ have been stamped into the replacement. Many have not however. That said, if your number has been covered with layers of paint and under seal etc then it may be difficult to locate even if the chassis is original.

The VIN plate(or vehicle Identification number) and chassis number plate on a Series 3 can be found in two places. Pre 1979 models were classed as having a chassis number and had the plate fixed to the bulkhead inside the cab by screws just above the gearbox cover. From 1979 vehicles were classed as having a VIN number and a different type of plate was riveted

Not meaning to sound funny (but can be quite easily if required) but, do you know owt about series landys?

I wouldn't buy a "tank" much as I'd like to and then go on a tank forum and ask why there isn't a name badge on the boot, what the big snorkel sticking out of the front of the castley bit is and if 48V electrics are any good. ;)

I thought the point of forums was to help build up communities of like minded folk whether they are new to the "scene" or not.

If you don't want to advise or be helpful in any way why take the time to respond with snide comments? Im certainly not going to give you a list of what my qualifications are or are not in the motoring world and even if I were to I don't have the address of the bridge you live under.
