I just joined the forums so I thought I would say hi ( I realize there is a sub forum for this ) but I have other fish to fry also.

When it comes to cars Im a bit like a child in a sweet shop and tend to buy whatever catches my eye on the day having planned for months what to buy, so this is what happened my old car was shot to pieces and I decided that it was time for another, I saved around 4 grand and was intent on getting a robust 4x4, I do plenty of hunting and fishing and dog walking and lets just say that I am slightly carefree going down these farmers roads to the rivers (if something drops off I pick it up on the way back)

I have had a disco 200 tdi before and did'nt really want another so I fancied a defender, I really like the classic shape and the no nonsense style of motoring that can be done in them......so I went car shopping with the missus and I ended up with.........a freelander td4 on an 05 plate:censored: I didnt listen to my childhood advice of never going shopping with a woman and paid for it with the "lovely looks" and the "oh its newer than those square ones" and the "oh look its got air con" If I want air con I open a window ffs so what happened?

I dont like the freelander at all, it feels like im sat in a fiesta and im too worried to dirty it because it just feels to new, I think its the first car I wanted to sell before I got the v5 document back, my misses says im crazy if I sell to buy an old defender (infact she said she would leave me) but she wont take the car so im ok on that front, so would a defender be ok for me?

Around about £4000 budget, got 2 kids but one never comes anywhere with us, needs to be robust enough for a bit of offroad everyweek, dont really need to use it for work as I use a van so only do about 5,000 miles a year, needs to be big enough for a big dumb dog, fishing gear and so on, limited knowledge of cars and repairing them but I love doing it.

I would really relish a crack at upgrading an old defender to give it a personal touch and I have a cracking mechanic whos a farmer in his spare time:) if jobs prove too much.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on what car I should be aiming at.

£4000 gives you a nice bit of choice. In a 110 ya can put yer fly rod on the roof and tied down at the front. My friend has a 110 with a good rack and ladder and fishes of the roof with a wee stool.

Haha good stuff, I think the 110 looks a cracking size and ideal if I can put 2 or 3 seats in the back for the kids, what engine would I be looking at for around the 4000 mark (providing I get that much for the free lander) The ones for sale I have been looking vary massively in quality and honesty probably, are there any tell tale signs to watch out for when looking for a 110?

Have a look at some of the other threads and they will all say the same thing. You need to poke about and rusty bits can be hidden. If the chassis is solid you're half way home. Check bulkhead and lower door. Mine turned to dust.

Stay away from bog standard diesel - you'll hate yourself.

Plenty of 200TDIs about

Don't know much about Discoverys

if yer going to be carrying the ballast and kids about youre going to need either the 110 station wagon or a disco.... you get a lot more for your money with a disco.
