A/c gas topup

HI,Has anybody topped up their a/c gas in a td5 with one of those off the shelf refills. I find my temperature won't go that low on a hot day so figure the gas needs topping up. If so is it recommended and easy and safe to do ,or should I go to a dealer and get fleeced for something else..

I had my disc 2 recharged a few weeks ago I priced up the stuff you can buy to do it yourself but had it done buy a local company for £40.00 so not much difference in price and they drained gas and oil before refilling

Topping up and recharging are different, if you know how much you require to top-up then go ahead, other wise get a professional a/c company to recharge as they will know the quantity to use and also check out your system..

Local **** fit did mine. It's bloody freezing now! Not that I've needed to use it yet

Kwik Fit local to me charge £49.95 - its a national offer but there seems to be some variation in price. Phone them first and tell them what car you have - they didn`t have the adapter for my LSE because of its age. Judging by the number of BMW owners queing up to get theirs done it looks like a reasonable offer.

Thanks guys, I live in Dublin and the local LR dealer is expensive and also finds other problems which cost more but I will sound out the Kwik Fit type of outfits and see what they have to offer and by the way whats the difference between recharging and topping up and how would I know which procedure I need.I have some cooling but I understand a/c or Climate Control should be able to drop the temperature 10 degrees lower than the outside temp..so am assuming I need just a topup

Bear in mind that you have taken your air-con fan off and in temps above 27°C and in slow moving traffic the air-con uses the fan to cool the air-con condenser.

I have used the r134a top up cans from e bay before with great success.

Inspired by this thread, I phoned Kwikfit, yes £49 and they test and re gas, so now three hours latter they re gassed and found no leaks, but no climate control, "must be a mech fault" said the guy, so they sucked the gas out again and said no charge, If I want an expert(used to be,drip under pressure) to do a full diagnosis that will be £35 then the bill for parts and the repair. so here I am no worse off but still no A/C. What sort off mech faults, he said he could hear the A/C pump cutting in and out and appears to be working....what else is there.
