Hi all, I've done a fair bit of searching and I'm still confused. I've got a 98 ES auto and as much as I love the old girl the rear lights are a terrible design, (sidelights and indicators in the bumper and fog lights, reversing lights and brake lights in the main light clusters), now please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that some other model years of the 300tdi had sidelights and indicators in the main cluster as well as the bumper which I think is a far better system. I would like to upgrade mine to incorporate the sidelights and indicators into the main cluster as well as the bumper, so my question is if I buy replacement light clusters with the orange indicator lense will they just plug in and work or will they require some sort of modification?

For the 300 series, from early/mid 1995MY D1s up to the 1997MY D1s all had the upper rear light cluster with the indicator, but it was changed with the 1998MY. And by the way it wasn't just the 300tdi engine models, petrol was the same.
Some of the 1998MY have all the necessary wiring others just require an extension, even so it straightforward.

As this question and be asked a few times, therefore details of the work entailed has already been posted more than once, so I won't repeat and I'll leave you to search 'D1 tail light modification'.

Thanks, I tried searching with the wording you suggested and several other headings as well, but I still don't know whether I could just change the cluster or if I would need to modify the wiring in some way. Could you possibly post a link to the relevant info for me please. Sorry if I sound like a doughnut but I will freely admit that when it comes auto electrics I know bugger all.

Hi, thanks for that, I've done quite a bit more searching now and what I've found seems to agree with what you say, that I should be able to just plug them in. Have to find some now at a sensible price. thanks all.
