Ok, i am reativilly new to defenders so please be gentle with me.

I live in Spain and before i left i checked the car over, topped up axle oils and gearbox and transfer box, the transfer box oil was brownish in colour, looks like it has had a small amount of water in there at some point, i drained and refilled.
The rear wheel bearing had a bit of play so nipped them up, with shafts out i gave the wheels a spin, no problems there, nice and quite and spun easilly.
Now i have just driven 1500 miles in two days and now i have very bad vibrations only under load, foot off throttle sweet as a baby, foot on and the whole car shakes, sometimes bad sometimes not to bad. happens arround 60 MPH.
I am thinking Axle? Prop Shafts? but could it eminate from engine as it feels a bit missey?
When i am doing 75-80 she is sweet but then not heavy load.
Any input would be most gratefull.

Best Regards

David

+1 for uj's,

I had the exact same symptoms at the weekend, could not hold on to the steering wheel while under load above 40 mpg.
It was the front prop uj nearest the transfer box, changed it yesterday and all ok.

Happy hunting.

+2. My front propshaft UJ has gone - bearing totally collapsed. It squeaks when running free and vibrates like hell around 40 - 50 mph. Ordered 4 today.

maybe we dont understand just how much power/torque/use our u/j`s do.

there not very big, they rotate at rediculous speeds,
and get left out of servicing "if" they have nipples/zirts/wtf you call them...

grease fittings, grease is cheap maintenace, have had over 200k on a set before, and 192k on the 1's now

+1 more :) i grease my UJs everytime i get under it, or after a trip out or before a long run...
another one to check is the prop bolts.
mine on the handbrake drum end worked loose and gave similar symptoms.
