ive recently had huge plumes of smoke behind me and on closer inspection of the turbo found there was a lot of play in the axial of the turbo. Got another turbo today and removed the old one, the intercooler pipe had oil lying in the u bend below the turbo, is this normal for turbo failure, do I need to replace all gaskets. Ive also been advised to crank the engine first before fitting the oil inlet pipe to insure its getting oil. Whats your thoughts on this advice. Just dont fancy doing all this again. thanks in advance

Replace gaskets. Good idea to bleed feed pipe before refitting.

its normal for induction pipes to be wet but shouldnt have pools of oil, its normal for failing turbo to pass oil, you wi;; need new gaskets for any you disturb and manifold gaskets is best replaced in any case, check drain hole on turbo is unblock before fitting pipe and prime turbo before fitting oil feed pipe

If you really want to turn a TD5 over without any danger of it firing, just pull the plug where the injector loom goes into the cylinder head. You know, the one at the front on the driver's side of the engine. You could unplug the crank sensor, but that's round the back hidden under the air intake pipe. But as James says, it should be fine if you merely put some oil in the relevant hole in the turbo.
