90 TD or 200 TDi ? Anyone got a date/chassis no. ?

Seriously looking at at '93 TDi, but I've seen an '89, allegedly with a TDi, with a lot less miles for a lot less money - anyone got a definitive answer on the title question?

Heard some really bad press about the pre 200 Tdi, TD engine - eg it eats gearboxes (and pretty much everything else) so I'm kind of keen to avoid one if poss (y'see I'm poor and can't afford either repairs or time without vehicle)

Ack - this landy thing is looking more and more expensive - had to give up smoking for the missus to agree to it - looks like I might have to give up drinking as well to afford it... Help!?

All 1993 diesel Defenders came with a 200tdi a good engine. Will do 30 plus to a gallon . watch our for chassis rot and gear changing problems.check high low box and difflock are all working properly.Use search facility at top of page for vin and engine nos this will lead to dingocroft or the dutch page,both helpful.Good luck.-------BB

200tdi is a fantastic engine, any bad press you heard about other engines
eating gearboxs, is due to the driver using them badly, not the engine to be honest, as the gearboxes were not that solid so using them properly went a long way in extending their life.

I have got a 300 tdi in my 94 90 defender
and its a good engine very pleased with it

But when i was looking for my Landy and test
drove a couple with 200 tdi and was very impressed
with its performance you cant go wrong with ether
engine............

a had a 1989 110 county td fur 14 years and it wis sound, there again a looked after it,

as with all cars engines gearboxes, chassis must be checked, not just pre 200tdi,s.

ma big 110 wiz great."bit ma new wans greatur" apart fae ri size.

its easier to go fae a 90 to a 110, than a 110 tae a 90"work that wan oot
