90 LR 4C Reg - Bin it or Repair It?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I think that I am going to start dismantling the old truck and make an assessment of what needs doing. If it looks beyond my capability I may well be looking for someone to take it off my hands. Hopefully, it won't be as I quite fancy getting the old 90 back to a decent state.

I will definitely be posting some more pics and shouts for help in the coming weeks!

So, managed to duck out of a trip to the sales with the missus and started to dismantle the 90 that my friend gave me.

It took me most of a morning to clear out the hay, fence posts (!) and horse muck out the everywhere inside and out.

Although it is now green, the original colour is coastguard yellow - and judging by the amount of sand on the top of the fuel tanks and in other orifices it was a coast guard vehicle at some point.

As suspected, it is pretty much rotten.

Rear Chassis
Bulk head
Doors
Front Bumper
Battery box ............ all need either binning or repairing.

Steering box is vague and the suspension is dodgy.

On the plus side the engine was replaced about 40,000 miles ago and I did find 20p in the ashtray.......

Here are a few pics so far. What's the consensus now - bin it or repair it???

The big questions are:

What is your budget?
How much are you willing to do yourself?
What standard of finish are you after?
How much time do you have to work on it?

I have another Landy - that is in a bit better condition (pic attached), so time to repair the 90 isn't a factor. I had thought of just spending however long it takes. Or however long the wife will tolerate it being on the drive way......

Budget, is a factor and I don't want to throw loads of cash at it, but happy to spend a grand or two over time. I am not after a concourse rebuild, I just fancy seeing if I can get a good useable truck that will get through an MOT.

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to repairing landy's. I do know one end of a spanner from another, but the welding will be something I need help with - and I think there will be a lot of it.

I was hoping that the kind and generous spirited folks on LandyZone, might be able to provide advice and help if I asked nicely.

Thanks for the tip about YRM panels. I've had a look and they do seem to be good value.

On with today's job of taking off the roof and stripping the dash.....

You appear to have the time and space. Do you know someone near by who could advise on the condition of the chassis, ie is it repairable? If not save your pennies and get a galv one - but first consider which engine you would like to use.

Your bulkhead could probably be repaired with new panels. I bought an early TD5 one off fleabay from one of the main suppliers for £250, which included most of the dash. I sourced everything else and sold every-last item I didn't use on fleabay.

Make a big list of what you need and state it on the thread. If time is not an issue you will source all that you need for little money.

Go on, get stuck into it! Nice early ish 90, would we have any series ones if all rusty farm land-rovers had been broken up?
Oh and could it be ex AA, being yellow all over. Thought coastguard was dark blue bottom and yellow roof? Just a thought. Good luck.

Think you might be right about the Coastguard being blue at the bottom. I was just guessing giving the half tonne of dry sand that was on top of the fuel tank. Maybe it is ex AA given it is definitely Yellow all over - even the roof before it was painted white.

The roof and screen are now off (see pics). Both are in good condition apart from the green mould. My son (in picture) managed to get off his iPAd long enough to help me lift the roof off - thanks!

Does anyone know of anybody near Leeds that could give me an opinion on whether the chassis / bulkhead is repairable? Thanks as always for any help and suggestions

If its a choice of spending money on a ladyboy or a landy then the landy wins all day long.

Not going to let my heart rule my head, but do fancy a project to take on. Besides if it takes me a couple of years to sort it then that's fine.

Red - thanks for your offer of dropping in and taking a look at it. Unfortunately I am away this Saturday, but if you are in Leeds area again, I'd be really grateful for your opinion.

i would usually say get stuck in and enjoy the fun of rebuilding the 90 but in the modern financial climate i would have to agree with mick and ML, sell it now before it drains to much money, i'm a deisel engineer and i work mostly on HGV's but weve had a couple of defenders brought to us and the money its cost to put some of them right is upsetting to have to charge but its mostly the cost of the parts it needs, sorry to be putting a downer on the situation

If you can get a galvanised chassis at the right money and a good bulkhead either to spray or galvanise you're off to a good start - it at least gives you a basis.

If your going to spank £1,500+ on a new chassis, then £250 on an okay bulkhead to tidy up then your better off offloading the truck and spending £2,000 on something fresher. You'll have to do axle work, chassis, full polybush, suspension/shocks, brakes, bulkhead, respray, tidy engine, belts etc... I'm all up for a challenge but unless you have access to the two key components cheap you're better off with a running just out of MOT 200 or 300 Tdi to tinker with... Don't forget your friend moved it on for free...

Merely my opinion...! Whatever you chose though let us know of course and good luck with the project if you take it on...
