Reverse gear on my 90 is very very bad, goes into gear fine but will only reverse a yard before jumping out..if i try and hold it in gear it crunches violently...and jumps out!

Now i'm planning on doing a 200 tdi conversion in the uk in august so ideally want the box to hold til then...is there anything that i can do with the box still in the landy? Or am i going to have to put up with it for 5 months??

Luckily i dont reverse too often anyway living in the sticks...but it is a real pain in car parks etc..

jam a bit of 4x2 off the seat bulkhead , or get out and push it backwards ;)

Does it feel like its fully engaging into reverse ?? . Is the reverse light switch screwed in too far limiting movement etc etc

Feels like its engaging fine...and i can sit with the clutch in no probs...it just wont stay in, as soon as i move backwards it jumps out...holding it in is really difficult, grinds terribly and really kicks back.

it does sound like its not fully engaging or you have selector probs or thrust washers have gone AWOL , tbh Ive never had one of these boxes apart yet so im a tad ??? . Im sure someone has on here tho .

you could whip the tunnel off and have a look to see whats moving lever wise I spose , DL the G/box manuel and have a ponder through it .
If you cant find it PM me with your e-mail addy and ill mail it tou you :) .

Storm did you ever find out what was causing it to jump out of reverse mate?

Nope...still as bad as it ever was...seems to be a little easier when ive done 30 miles or so...(not all in reverse obviously)..but i mean a little...i have to really balance on the clutch to go a couple of yards.

If i am on even the slightest incline its a def no go...crunches like a bastid and really kicks out. I just have to put up with it for a couple more months, i've got a gb and 200 engine ready to go in....going to come to the uk late summer and get it done along with an mot...

You got the same problem?

Woooohoooo iv sorted it mate!!

I did have the Exact same problem you desribed! It turned out to be my revering light switch! I started screwing it out, then it started getting slightly harder to unscrew (threads were damaged)

Once i got it out it was clear that something had been rubbing/catching on the end of the swith!

I screwed it right out went for a spin and immediatly noticed a difference!

Have you checked yours mate? Not saying its deffo that but was for me (Phew!)
