Hello,

I am planning to go on a slow road trip around Italy and greece in a land rover defender 110 or 90, have not made my mind up!!!

I need to get as many MPGs as possible. I have heard the best i will achieve would be in a defender 90 2.5 N/A? What mpg would i get out of a 200tdi in a 110 van? I like the idea of 110 van but is there a big difference in mpg to the 90?

Do they have proper roads in Greece and Italy? I've never been out of Yorkshire so I wouldn't know. If they do, and fuel consumption is at a premium and your doing it slowly, then could I suggest you do it on a pushbike!

run it on heating oil half a litre of engine oil mixed with 25 litres of 28 second heating oil

It would if engine oil was used but it is hydraulic oil which is thinner and mixes straight away with the kero.

My dad runs his VW van on used vegatable oil and it works a treat. He has gone down the legal route which is hassle but less hassle that getting caught I suppose. The only problem is it stinks (as you might expect) like old chip fat! which aint too pleasant.
Another mate uses a heating oil/engine oil mix and again has no problems except it stinks like a paraffin tractor which gives it away a bit, but he has got away with it for a couple of years now!
