Howdy all!

I am looking for tyres for my landy! It currently has 7.50 x 16 's but since fitting the parabolic springs, which have given quite an impressive lift, these look tiny! I would like 9.00 x 16 as these look the part (as have one to compare to!) but I can't find a decent set!

Anyone know where I could get a cheap set or what the equivalent would be in modern tyre sizes as I really don't get tyre measurements it turns out!

Without a lot of further mods they won't go on, I know because I've got them.

Vass have them, metric equivalent is 255/100R16, they have them too.

You will probably be better off fitting 235/85R16s, almost as tall as 900x16s, but radial and far more readily available in multiple patterns. I have a set on my 110. 900x16s now are just grossly overpriced rocking horse droppings unless money is no object or you are very, very lucky...

You could always go back to standard springs to regain "the look" of course. ;)

Hmmm ok , will look into 235/85R16.

Its not just the look I amafter though ;) lol. The car is being modified for offroad use and had a lot of work done so far so bigger tyres are needed really!

Assume these would require a few mods to fit too then?

Some will claim 900x16s will just bolt straight on - Landrover certainly didn't believe so.

Have a look at www.onetonlandrover.co.uk/tech1 which shows how Landrover did it. Modifications were made to the suspension mounts, and to the chassis to allow for propshaft movement, all just to allow the bigger tyres.

I dont think anyone would be so silly as to say they will fit without mods.

There is a vast difference in stated tyre size and stated tyre size so be wary!

235 85 r 16 is a wider 750 sized tyre. 8.25's are best but not cheap you will most likley have to import them. 900 x 16 you need to do all sorts including gear ratios and its pretty much start again new tranny box modified x members and the like so its not a bolt on option. especially if you want it reliable offroad things like propshafts need special attention when you start messing with springs droop compression and checking for binding of props brake pipes etc.

I know of at least two otherwise bog standard series vehicles with 900x16s stuffed on them. Not what I would do but it has been done - apparently with success but I am sceptical. I would imagine they are too much for standard halfshafts anyway, especially the Rover axle on the back of a IIA 109". As a pointer, we do not know what vehicle the OP is intended to fit them to.

235s often turn up as cast-offs with little mileage as folks fit alloys to new Defenders. When I had the tachograph calibrated in my 110 the tyres size was measured as 8.50x16, so not a lot of difference there. I do agree though that the gearing would be all wrong, and there is increased risk of body damage, not to mention reduced fuel economy due to higher rolling resistance. Best left to FCs and 1-Tons really...

235's are nowhere near 900's, 235 gives you about 32", 900's on mine are 36.5".

Mods that I did are having to cut front wings and panel, adjusting steering stops, removing bracing from under rear tub, extended bump stops, trimming front bumper, one ton shackles, parabolics.

I'm yet to break a shaft, but I've done a few diffs.

Is it worth it?..................Yes.

Lol yup but your propshaft falls off and clubs the xmember when your axle drops! (I Nearly caught it in my teeth at the comp) Most 900x16 are only 34-35 inch xl's and xcls are a particularly tall skinny tyre even the 750 is very very tall tyre. If I was running 750's I'd run xcls or a copy of the BFG track edge.

There is a lo of variation in 900x16s, michelins are very tall, dunlops, avons and bargrips are not, and are not much taller than 235s.
