landy was running like merde today.. black reek from the exhaust and cutting out at lights and kangarooing etc etc.. got home and had a look over it beefed up the manifolds again,, still crap, disconnected the air filter. still crap, Hmm its definitely ultra rich like its just dumping fuel in and the mixture screw does nothing .. Ok took the carb off and tore it apart, not much to see but did consider the floats to be a wee bit low .. cleaned it all blew it out and put it back on.. Still crap , clamped up the vacuum lines to the servo and the dizzy, nope still crap.. Hmm , could it be more serious.? pulled the plugs expecting them to be a mess , they were black but they looked freshly blackened , cleaned them up and checked the gaps al OK so did a compression test expecting low compression, bearing in mind I did nothing to this engine other than change the oil and filter.. all 4 cylinders 165 psi dead .. haven't checked the spec but didn't consider that to be to bad .. plugs in fired it up ... still the same ..
Had a wee think then pulled the carb top off again and checked the float height .. by actually measuring them this time .. 2mm high at 35 mm so dipped it to 33 and called it done and reassembled the carb .. I should have fired it up at that point as a reference ,, but moved right onto points .. Points appeared to have closed a wee bit so re gapped them at 15 thousandths of an inch and put everything back together .
Fired it up and it was idling sweet , screwed in the mixture and it reacted to the changes . st the idle and mixture and had a look down the carb .. no sign of fuel being dumped in as it was previously and very responsive ..
re connected the air filter and took it for a spin .. Initially a wee flat spot ( cold) but not kangarooing , no stalling and pulls clean good response when warmed up with flat spot gone .. didn't have time to check any further but relived to get it sorted . Probably idling better than it ever has .
Si it was either the float level or points or a combination of .. my moneys on the float level or a piece of much being dislodged lol..
Before I began I also sprayed the inlet manifolds at the gaskets with wd40 but that made no difference either ..
Its really annoying when you dont find anything obvious , but for now its running like a swiss watch , well, maybe an old Timex windyupper
long may it continue ..
