Gentlemen (Ladies),

Looking for some guidance please. My rig started blowing oil out of the filler cap so, suspecting a valve problem, I just completed a cold compression check. I came up with the following numbers...0, 100, 90, 92. I'm looking for 'economical' options on how to proceed from here. There seems to be an obvious problem with #1 but the readings for the other 3 cylinders aren't great either. My mechanic skills are somewhere between novice and intermediate so please dumb down replies to my level. Thanks very much!

Head gasket?
 
Still low.

To be honest from the sound of things I'd have the valve conver then the cylinder head off. This could be a bad head gasket or a burnt valve on the deceased cylinder, or could also be a stuck valve not closing properly.

One way or another you need to figure out why the cylinder is not building pressure, so off with the cylinder head it is. This is not a nightmare to do - read through the relevant sections of the repair manual and you will see. You will need a torque wrench, but this is a small cost compared to having the job done.

With the head off you need to inspect the gasket for burned/blown through sections of gasket between the passages. If you're seeing pressurizing of the valve gallery it will be between #1 and its valve passages.

A burned valve is easy to spot - they often have wedges burnt or split out of them and look awful - but arenot a nightmare to fix.

Has it marked the cylinder wall if it's not put a decent used piston in but check it out very throughly for wear and see how well the ring s fit etc don't waste your money on copy pistons they are never just right and a used gen one will be as good and definately get the injectors checked that's why it's burnt the piston also check your pump timing to. Having said that if it started and ran well before its probably within range .While your head is off check it over for small cracks in pre combustion chambers and check the valves over for wear on the stems/guides and valve seats .but most of all keep smiling .
