Hi I have recently purchased a 83 Chevey suburban 4x4 with a 6.2 liter
disel engine.Since it was my first Diesel
I took it to my mechanic who looked it over replaced a temporary drain
plug in the engine block that the previous owner had installed (it was
leaking all over the place ) but other wise pronounced it worth the
1000 bux the guy was asking
I replaced the fuel filters and changed the oil and started to drive
it. About two weeks ago Iwas driving back home from a gig about 2:30 in
the morning and noticed the truck was over heating .I was about a mile
and a half from home so I turned the heater on to try to bump the temp
down a little ..no heat .Yikes
Got home and sure enuff discoverd that yet another drain plug in the
block (drivers side) had popped out. Cussin my bad luck I Dropped off
the truck at the shop expecting to hear I had cracked the block or
something equally bad . But to my suprise after a new plug was
installed and coolant refilled it started right up with dry exhaust .
Feeling like perhaps I had missed the bullet I took the truck out for a
test drive watching my gauges for any sign of trouble . Thats when it
got weird. The truck started to over heat .. then fixed itself this was
not repeated that day but the next day it did it again. I figured I had
lost the thermostat so replaced it ..same symptoms but worse, also
noticed that when truck over heated got no hot air from the heater and
when it would temporarily fix itself got hot air . ran it with out a
thermostat as a way of checking the waterpump and worked fine except
engine was ice cold of course tried another thermostat same symptoms .
If anybody has any Ideas would Appreciate the help
