Cheers mate excellent thread.. So the solinoids work of 5V and are either in or out, easy enough to check.
Brillient.
Is fuse 4 ok in the engine compartment fuse box? Should be 15amp. Its the smaller plastic box, of the two behind the battery.
I assume the engine starts ok. When you select either D for drive forward or R for reverse, do the engine revs drop as the engines being loaded? If not them as MHM says it could be a solenoid problem. Auto not being able to select a gear etc. Youd certainly expect something electrical if it suddenly stopped working, after working ok.
This sort of fault will probably be easier to find with a diagnostic computer. this may be the nexy step now the obvious stuff has been checked. The type you need will need to be able to talk to the auto computer, as well as the engine computer I think. Land Rovers Test book (T4) is what you ideally need. There are other software packages out there, but they wont be able to talk to the auto if this is required. It may be the case the engine computer has a fault code, which you could read with a normal fault code reader.
Theres plenty of garages out there with T4 who will visit the car to help diagnose the fault. Cost some £s but it will give you the answer you need. Failing that youll need to get is carried to a garage. This chap is fairy local to you TS AUTOS | MG Rover Repair Specialist | MG Rover Mobile Repairs & Diagnostics West Midlands so you could give him a call and see if he can help. He deals with rovers normally. Your engine is also fitted in rovers and same with the auto.
you made that sound so easy lol
No better time to starthad 5 mins today so i got him to turn it over and revs did drop when gears selected????
Could this mean torque converter working???
so would this rule the solenoids out???
Not sure there are quite a few in there???
never had chance to look up on checking the fluid level yet
What £50 for a replacement, solinoid pack? i would snap his hands off if it was.
I very much doubt an overfill would cause this problem.
Can you video the car when in gear , maybe some auto box and ird porn too would help?
Try selecting Drive, then move the gear stick to the right, then push forwards to manually select 2nd gear. Might move the car forwards as this uses a different mixture of solinoids. Just a guess.
Have you tried a code reader on the car?
By control unit I think he's referring to the auto gearbox computer. Located in the L shape plastic box behind the battery. 2 computers in there. The one with the smaller connector is for the auto. T'other one is the main engine/car management.whats a control unit? the part where the lever is?
yeah what hippo said lol
how much is a code reader thing and how do they work thinging might be worth me and mate going 50/50 on one ???
