51 reg v6 auto no gears

hello

my mate just purchased a 51 reg v6 auto and it has no drive at all,the bloke he had it off has never used it as he brought it that way but never got around to getting it looked at,

he said the bloke he had it off had the box replaced so looking at around 15 months ago,

box looks new so i would say it has been replaced

apparently he went out to it one morning and had no gears didnt want to pay out anymore so sold it.

any ideas?? could it be the ird unit??? or a switch/control unit??
 
i cant say i have any looked at an auto freelander. is there no dip stick 4 the box? if there is no atf init there will be no drive.

Check the auto gearbox wiring harness connections are mated correctly. Located between the head light and the battery, just above the auto gearbox. 2x barrel connectors shown below. Twist to join.:

You say no forward gears? Does reverse work? If so, then this would suggest the auto has electrical power. If not, then is the auto computer wiring harness connection ok? This is located in the L shaped plastic box, behind the battery. Remove the allen key bolts and have a look. 2x computers in there. One nearest the battery is the main comouter. The one behind is the auto gearbox.

Of no reverse or forwards gears, have a look at the selector connection under the auto gearbox. This is located just below the H in the photo below, at the end of the concertina rubber. If the bolt is loose, then the gear stick won't select any gears. check to see if this moves when you move the gear stick.

hello thanks for the reply..... no has no gears at all not even any feeling of a gear selection

will get him to check this out and let you know
 
spoke to my mate who has had a chat with the chap he had it off and sounds like it could be one of the aforementioned as it just went over night with no warning, but he can't check it till next week as its locked away lol

if he needs new control unit will any year of auto v6 work????
 
Not sure about the control unit or if there were any changes. Best to check electrical connections first etc. It mat by thr connector to the computer just needs pushed on and clipped in place. Does he get a flashing F then $ on the dash display? This indicates the car has sensed it has a problem.

just asked him and he said no lights on display, he cant get access until middle of the week as where its parked the owner has gone away with the keys,
so as soon as he gets back he'll go and check the connections out
 
Or just maybe is has no gearbox at all?

:) he's finally getting access to it today so he can check if it has a box :D how would he tell:rolleyes::D



printed all advice off for him so hopefully will get it going today but if not as Schwarzenegger would say "I'll be back" :doh:
 
well guys, he check gear box and it has one ;)

contacts all checked and sprayed with cleaner

selector cable still in place

getting the red light at the side of gear lever and the p,n, d, r , so on displayed on the clocks

is the control unit mentioned for the box coded to the engine or will anyone work???

did notice a small amount of oil on the belly pan below the gearbox but only really small amount would losing this cause box to stop working???

also been told the ird can fail on the 1.8 causing you to lose drive completely can this happen on the v6 auto????

I`d say auto box problem, as even if Ird was facked I would expect some grinding or crunching noises

Could be no fluid in the auto box, torque converter would not work, and no drive.

ok so low fluid can someone point me in the right direction as to where to find the info for the level check and to top it up??

Is fuse 4 ok in the engine compartment fuse box? Should be 15amp. It’s the smaller plastic box, of the two behind the battery.

I assume the engine starts ok. When you select either D for drive forward or R for reverse, do the engine revs drop as the engines being loaded? If not them as MHM says it could be a solenoid problem. Auto not being able to select a gear etc. You’d certainly expect something electrical if it suddenly stopped working, after working ok.

This sort of fault will probably be easier to find with a diagnostic computer. this may be the nexy step now the obvious stuff has been checked. The type you need will need to be able to talk to the auto computer, as well as the engine computer I think. Land Rover’s Test book (T4) is what you ideally need. There are other software packages out there, but they won’t be able to talk to the auto if this is required. It may be the case the engine computer has a fault code, which you could read with a normal fault code reader.

There’s plenty of garages out there with T4 who will visit the car to help diagnose the fault. Cost some £’s but it will give you the answer you need. Failing that you’ll need to get is carried to a garage. This chap is fairy local to you TS AUTOS | MG Rover Repair Specialist | MG Rover Mobile Repairs & Diagnostics West Midlands so you could give him a call and see if he can help. He deals with rovers normally. Your engine is also fitted in rovers and same with the auto.

cheers hippo never noticed a drop or increase in revs but will look out for that tomo and check the fuse and fluid lever if i can find it on rave unless some can point me to it on here, failing that will try and get someone out to plug it in
