5 days into ownership and D3 won't start

HI, new member as of yesterday, thanks all for the welcomes.
Sadly the D3 (127,000 miles) won't start this morning (sub-zero temperature) and an HDC fault warning has appeared.
Glow-plugs dash symbol took maybe 8-10 seconds to go out.
Cranked well initially now on the charger.
Any thoughts?

Hi and welcome to the forum, I am by no means an expert and I'm sure that someone will come along soon with much more knowledge than me, but I have heard that the battery condition is crucial on the D3 and other models after that, I have been told that all sorts of strange fault codes can be thrown up and weird issues start to occur as a result of a less than fully charged battery. Hope this helps.

I found a thread about tricking the engine coolant sensor by heating it up with a hair dryer.
30 seconds of heat and started right up.:)
Also found a thread suggesting a 5k Ohm resistor switched in parallel whilst starting (again to trick the sensor) then switched off.
May give that a try if I could just understand what it meant:(

It's your glow plugs mine does the same. It's got nothing todo with the orange glow plug light, when they fail most don't bother changing them due to the large amount that snap off instead we fit a remote switch to override and use the existing fbh to pre warm before starting on cold days

If you get the HDC warning on starting, the battery is failing. The D3 needs a healthy and large battery, or problems arise.
Also as suggested, the glow plugs also need changing.

Can't believe how much help there is on the various Land Rover forums (fora?).
Beats the vitriol on Caferacer.net
 
Webasto oval timer are very good, but only useful as a timer, as they cannot switch the heater on when car is awake.

Google land rover fuel burning heater or FBH.

Many modern diesels cannot make enough heat themselves, and this is where the fbh comes in to help engine warm up to efficient operating temp asap, and to keep it warm even when running, not unusual to get to your destination in cold weather and the fbh is stilll running.
Fitted to many many makes/models of car/trucks.
