Hi. I already have a 4.6 hse that I look after for my Dad and Its got me going. Trouble is theres loads available and im looking for lpg converted. Would you go for 4.6 or 4.0 and why? Would you go manual or Automatic?
This is not a poll to fight over just some valueable info to help me decide which to buy. Both are 'R' registration but different colours which for you??

Thanks

Vic

I've never had a P38, my instinct would be go for the 4.6 (it sounds better saying it's a 4.6 as a posed to a 4litre doesn't it  ) however, my head would tell me differently....I believe the 4.0 has less issues....I'm sure somebody can enlighten me on this whether it's true or not.....

Auto Auto Auto all day everyday. It's a Range Rover! You don't have to change gear! It does it for you  Not to mention, I love the 'H gate' you get with the P38 Autos :)

If going for one with lpg I would go for 4.6 as you do lose some power with lpg. Having had three discos and one rr on lpg, I wont be converting this one.
I also think the 4.6 may have been bored out just a tad too much although having said that I have 4.6 and love it.
Def auto. On my first auto and always preferred manual but now think is the dogs b****ocks. It does know when to change gear and I think gives better economy.

Welcome

4.6 has that extra bit of poke. 4.0 on LPG feel a little strained. 4.6 only available in auto. 4.0 auto box a bit weak. Auto is way nicer but bit more thirsty - although with LPG less of an issue. '98 4.6 seems to be the one to go for from another thread on here.

The 4.6 is bored out just the same amount as the 4.0. The 4.6 has a longer stroke. ;);)

+1 a 4.6 Thor
Also has a better transmission.
Very little difference in economy between the 4 & 4.6 but a noticeable difference in performance.

I have a 4.6, it is fantastic, plenty of pulling power when towing a large twin axle caravan. It has a stronger gearbox than the 4.0 as far as I'm aware. I recently got my 1.5 ton tracked Kubota digger stuck in a wet field, the 4.6 pulled it out easily. This doesn't mean the 4.0 wouldn't have done it, but the available power is great on my 4.6. It has that extra grunt to overtake easily on the road too.

The 4.0 is a little disappointing, but if you want a manual as already said, it's your only choice.
Defo a 4.6 for me but I'd want an auto anyway,
And for reliability.......... Ford 281 :D

4.6 Auto - no question - if you're going to tow try to find a Thor (99 onwards with bunch of banana looking inlet manifold) they have much more torque just off idle.
