like I said, one of my new plugs (same part number) was the smaller type for

Don't understand what you mean the plug size is smaller...if your using the same socket to fit all plugs they are all the same socket diameter...it's the gap between outside of plug removal socket to plug head recess that's the problem..

I had two different sized plugs/sockets. Both were M14 plugs, but had different sized Hex drives. I always thought the hex size was dependant on the thread size tbh. I’ve had diesels for the last 10 years, so haven’t touched a spark plug for at least that long!!
I’m not the best at explaining myself either, which doesn’t help
I did post a link to a photo earlier in the thread. The only other difference was that the ceramic shank was a slightly larger diameter on the bigger plug, so perhaps they insulate better?

The one on the left is 10/94-12/98 BPR6E The one on the right is 99-onward PFR6N-11, however they both fit,

There were some differences in the head castings I've seen - I don't know if it was differences in early to late model year production, or what. But on one of the other forums a guy found that out when he bought spark plugs and found they wouldn't fit as the heads had smaller channels where the plugs went in.

A lot of us who run on LPG use the BPR6ES plugs, but there is a different version - BCPR6ES I think which is the same plug, but with the smaller hex head on top, which fits the heads with the smaller channels around the plug. I don't know the reason behind the changing of it, but it is possible to get the same kind of plugs (at least in the NGK range) to fit either.

It's been a crazy year work-wise - I have no idea how it is middle of July already! So haven't been about on any of the forums much, and also still trying to fit in works on P38's for other people, and myself when I am at home means I've had next to no spare time! Have you still got your P38?
