lol, I see where you are coming from- I really do. I picked up a 5mp borescope for £25 so thats cheaper than the £70 valley cover/gasket and thats without the £40 shipping from aus lol.

My plan is to inspect it with that for any rust flakes that went outside the head and then re-fit all the parts which I have now cleaned up- Just waiting on loctite and some free time.

I dont want to strip it yet, the reason is as follows. I was going to build a test rig for it with the rad and all guages etc, I then figured it would probably only take a day to put it in the car, If I am going to do that anyway then I may as well just put it in and try it as the compression test was good. if it then fooks up I will just pull it out if need be. I have a garage with hoist and pit now so it should be ok.

If I get the rocker covers (still not decided which ones yet) painted this week the if the mrs gives me min at the weekend and the bits are here they can go back on with the rocker gear, the sump will come off next for a clean out and paint then I am just wating for my box off james and it can go in! :D

In any v8 thread it's like "heeeeeeeeerrrrre's Jonny!" and then all us lazy gits have to start making excuses as to why we're not doing 'this' or don't fancy 'that'... :p

You have the most awesome advice Jon but by Jove you know how to make a man graft!!

I am ever grateful though because if it wasn't for your persistence I wouldn't have opened my engine up to re-rebuild it and it might have exploded already, so for that I thankyou and advise others to listen carefully to what he has to say!!

Cheers :D

Hi Sam,

I know - I've just done the same in another one!!

The reason I say it though is probably because of my experience in kit cars rather than Landys - it took 3 days to get the engine and gearbox out of the Cobra and it will take longer to get back. I realise its easier than that on the Landys.

I still think though that when you've got it out and its on a stand why not do as much as you can - at the end of the day the majority is only time and cost is relatively low. I do accept though that this is why it took me 9 months to rebuild my engine!!!

I do understand the points that Fett makes though :)

Jon

Thanks, well we can both see each others point lol :D

I wonder what the standard time for engine and box out with a hoist is? Its always the one stuck bolt that takes 3 hours lol

Oh and while we are talking of parts has anyone heard of these brands and are they any good?

QH?
NAK?

Cam followers - Clevite?

QH is Quinton-Hazell, one of the more established pattern part brands, have been going for donkeys.

NAK I haven't heard of.

Clevite I have heard of but not sure where!!

Hi gents, bit of an update, lots has happened in some respects.

Firstly as per the album :
Land Rover Zone - fett's Album: further engine choices

The supplies arrived, loctite, extra instant gasket, imperial socket (wrong one ffs, bloody imperial crap),engine lacquer etc. All the rust has been cleaned off, all the bits are matched up in pairs , oiled and bagged and the engine is oiled and wrapped, the rockers are in those plastic baskets on the left of the shelf btw.

Anyway, I then found out that this engine may be the low comp version, if it is It should have dished pistons, they wont be any good for the power I want as its only running 8:1 which is bollox except it does give me a reason to take it all apart and fit 3.5 pistons which fit. I will need to work out which ones to give me the best power though. I know its terrible as I have taken 3 lots of rv8 pistons out before but I cannot remember if they are normally dished in the uk? an ideas?

I have the borescope now and it works well, I am going to take the plugs out and look inside to check if the are dished or not which will decide the answer to the re-build question.

I did some work on the range rover and had to run it up to bleed the cooling system:

Which if honest begs the question why the fook am I changing the engine at all lol.

Then finally all those photos of the block are of that engine I bought in bits delivered by the LZ courier service. its a 3.5 ex race block apparently, it was cheap as chips and came with two cranks, loads of other bits and some pistons which may be used in the 4.4.

The bores seem good and no lip at all, it had a tiny ammount of surface rust on the top of the bores on a couple but it mostly came off with some oil. There was one dink on the mating face, right on the liner and the head which is a bugger pictured here:

What do you reckon, is it in need of decking as a result?

yeah noisy is being a lazy cnut on this thread :p

well I lacquered them today, but I still have the leyland blue paint for the p76 type ones so I am trying to decide- I prob wont get them pained until next week as work is hectic atm

Sorry fett!

Yeah, just been a bit absent minded recently, urm, not sure why - guess I've just not got my teeth into this thread for some reason :(

ANYWAY.

I'd be having some nice edelbrock covers on it I think.

Seeing as its not technically a rover block you can get away with it :D

Otherwise, like you say, enjoy the p76 flavour covers, let people know it ain't RV8.

OR sneak under the radar with the rover covers.

I would take the expensive option though for ultimate blingage :)

well I am gonna have to spent my cash internally if they turn out to be low comp pistons it will all be coming apart for new pistons! I know that will make you lot happy but it will cost me lol
