hi there just managed to get my disco through its mot by the skin of its teeth.one of the jobs was abs sensor nsf showing air gap ok for a day or two then light on again .changed wheel bearing as the play came back after 50 miles or so had 3-4mm endfloat even after replacing it.i did notice that where the shaft came out the stub axle it looked like copper slip (i asume its the remains of the brass spacer and grease) is it the stub axle bearing worn or cv causing the prob or both 97 d1 130000 miles.

When you did the wheel bearing, did you follow 'standard ' procedure?

Did you use Timken bearings? Did you find out why it came loose?

This is what should be done:

Undo 2 x caliper bolt bi-hex 13mm...

Support the bottom of swivel housing with jack or axle stand, undo 2 x 17mm top swivel pin bolts to release brake pipe bracket, refit at least one bolt, tie caliper up out of the way...

Undo drive member 5 x 17 mm headed bolts...

Remove dust cap, circlip and shims

Remove drive member, straighten lock tab on outer bearing nut...

Remove nut tab washer and inner nut ...

Pull hub off, knock bearing races and seal out...

Fit new bearings -- don't use a punch without protecting bearing race (use a bearing dolly or old race)...

Grease well, fit seal (the right way round concave toward bearing)...

Refit, the solid washer, then first nut torqued to 65Nm, spin the wheel to 'settle' the bearing, tighten fully to seat bearings, then back off 1/2 a turn and re-tighten to 4NM...

Fit new tab washer and outer nut, tighten to 65Nm without allowing the inner nut to move, fully lock tab over inner and outer, one at one side, the other opposite...

Refit drive member, using one bolt to hold CV splines fully through drive member as you nip it up...

52mm or should be for a Disco 1, it isn't torqued up, but just adjusted till freeplay is just removed, outer nut just needs to be tight ...

With a 52mm 3/4" drive socket and a combination of reducers most torque wrenches will do the above...

the swivel hub is fine and i have fitted the wheel bearings as by the book.the problem is inside the stub axle(have a very quite whin coming from that side) think i will get new seal and bearing and as its done 130000 think i might as well fit a new cv while im in there.
