More issues,

As above I can't move it with my air gun (it's not to most powerful)
I don't have a locking tool or have the time to order one.

Also the head is fully off which I guess rules out the starter trick.

Any suggestions

Done it!!!
In 4th, wheels chocked, handbrake on, impact socket on a 2 foot 1/2" crack bar with a 3 1/2 foot piece of box section over the bar. Chisel on a rag down to back of the pulley, twitchy bum moment and crack !!!!

You don't need the head on to use the starter. Large as possible bar on the socket, resting on the chassis leg and flick the starter on the key. Otherwise, shock it loose with a hammer and chisel on the corners of the bolt, although this may damage the bolt head.

Treat yourself to the correct holding tool as you still have to refit the bolt (and it takes quite a bit of effort to do it up properly)

I think the air gun is ok maybe? It's a draper expert one with 339NM torque But my compressor is just one of the little 50litre 1.5hp ones

It managed the bolt in my 300tdi disco a couple of years back. It will hopefully tighten it up fine.

Good tip is to mark a line of tipex/paint across the bolt head and on the pulley so at each service you can tell at a glance if its moved.

What pressure is the compressor making, have to say 339nm is nothing for an 1/2 air gun, if you can ramp the pressure up the gun will make more power as they are normally rated at their rating at 90psi and most workshops run at 150psi.

Think that's rated at 68psi. I'll see if I can up the pressure.
May be able to get a better gun in a month or so but £££ is tight.

I'll do the paint thing, thanks

I think any gun will struggle at low pressure regardless of what it cost, Ive used 20 quid guns before and like I said above at the higher pressures they do the job.

I brought a cheapo air gun and never got on with it. This thread made me wonder how I was going to get my crank bolt off the engine I've just pulled out so I charge my 18v snap on gun up today and it cracked it straight off. Where abouts in the county r u
