Hi all

My 1996 Disco has a switch start wired into it as the key is unreliable and doesn't always turn over. My Dad bought this vehicle from new and had lots of problems with it turning over from day one but the fellas at the dealership tried to fix it and couldn't route out the problem. So my Dad, being VERY mechanically minded etc put a switch in it to bypass the key after the warranty expired. My problem is that when I tried using the switch today it set the alarm off and wouldn't turn over! Does anyone have any idea what could the problem be?

Many thanks

Sounds like yer spider is cream crackered.;)

That's a really good link thanks ratty:) one issue that makes me think that it isn't the spider is that the switch my dad put in was to bypass this problem. Was actually thinking that it might be the connection from this switch to the starter motor that has failed. Anyway I have someone coming to look it at before the weekend. Keep u posted

When it isn't starting, check the fly lead on the starter motor is turning live when the key is turned to the 'crank' position (small wire with spade connector). These can also be prone to dodgy connections. Sometimes simply giving the connector a wiggle will sort it out. If the lead is turning live and wiggling aint worked then yer sterter is goosed. If it aint turning live, try momentarily connecting a feed straight from the battery or shorting a wire or screwdriver between the main + starter connection and the spade terminal.

well i got the disco back from the garage today. Found out something a little startling! firstly the cause of the problem was the starter motor. replaced and now working. However this was caused by my fathers wiring of the sepertae starter switch. this was direct to starter motor without a relay and or fuse. The mechanic talked jargan for a while but soon got my attention when he said the words fire and lucky it didnt catch!!

TBH it sounds unlikely that your fathers wiring burnt the starter motor out unless the switch jammed.

Well it took me by surprise a little as that switch has been in there for a long time. However the switch is a little flimsy and does feel like is is sticking. So I need to get a 40amp relay followed by a push button start. The guy at the garage said I need a 35amp button start. I can't seem to find them anywhere!
