Hi all

My 300 tdi is approaching 20 years old, but has only covered a mere 100k miles, still I appreciate the truck and want to keep on top of servicing and reliability as a result.

I plan on keeping the 90 long term and would like to get the turbo rebuilt professionally, whilst possibly getting a slightly bigger compressor turbine fitted (aka converting to a hybrid).

Does the 300tdi have a sweetspot in terms of what turbo would be a good trade off against increased size, lag and gains? Are there preferred choices for companies to use? I am in south wales if that helps. I would love to go for a vnt but cannot justify the 2k expense at the moment with an impending house move, so something 1/4 off the cost is far more acceptible:)

Many Thanks
Dan

The first question I asked anyone walking into our performance shop, was "What are your goals" regarding turbo interests.

Gathering from what you wrote, you would like a bit more power and doing some preventative maintenance.

Since you cannot spend too much in the near future, your best option based on what you are looking for would be to upgrade your intercooler to a bigger one, rebuild your existing turbo stock or get a new one, do the famous fuel pump tune using a good boost gauge and an accurate EGT gauge.

By doing this however, you will also be defeating your other goal, which is to keep your Landy ticking for a long time trouble free.

More power does not come free, you will be increasing engine wear, internal engine pressures, drive train wear etc. You will have to do earlier regular maintenance work.... Oil will need more frequent changes, not sure if you are using full synthetic.

Think this through before you finally decide.

You can get retrofit vgt for the 200 and 300 diesels, I reckon this is the way to go as best of all worlds.

Hi Dan have you tried bearmach in Caerphilly or Swansea, they do everything you should need, however i would be cautious asking a old engine to work harder
