Afternoon,

My new Job requires me to drive longer distances then I used to, now mainly motorways,

Having 6 gears over 5 gave me an idea,

Is there an easy way if anyway to mate a 300tdi engine (the original) to an out sourced gearbox from a TD5 defender ?

Am I wasting my time ?

300 wont mate to a TD5 box but I'm selling a brand new short bellhousing R380 (but can convert to long if needed) gearbox with higher ratio gears in it?

Will bolt straight up to the 300tdi

Mines the 53J so better motorway ratios I suppose looking at it Links

Hadt thought about the transfer box,

Out of curiosity, why cant a 300tdi be mated to a TD5 gearbox ?

Either way it explains why I couldn't find any info about mating the two together,

Would the Disco's transfer box affect they way it drives in offroad/snow & icy conditions ?

thought 300 tdi and td5 both used R380 boxes?

they do but bell housing is longer as is input shaft ,also you cant just chenge input shafts so easily as 300s tend to be j suffix with smaller input bearing and td5 k suffix on with larger bearing which also means case and front cover differ

Td5 input shaft is different to a 300 tdi even though it's the same box in principal.

I did a modification on my old Discovery 300tdi which involved changing the old fifth gear to a V8 fifth gear.

This reduces the motorway cruising revs by about 500 rpm. giving a higher MPG.

A new fifth gear costs around £100 and then labour to fit it.

All you need to do is get the local place to pull the collar and undo the 32mm nut then you can swap it over, get them to tighten nut up again and you can put the box back together!

Not even 5 mins worth of labour for them :) thats how I did mine
