Hi all,

In the last month or so my defender has developed this ticking noise, it’s a 1998 defender 90 with a 300tdi engine, I’ve had the valves adjusted with a new gasket but it’s still ticking.

The speed of the ticking matches the revs.

I’ve been told I need a new engine but she runs great besides the ticking so I’m a little unsure.

would anyone have any idea of what it could be?

Welcome to the forum.

With the engine cold, take the snake belt off and start the engine.
If it doesn't 'tick' spin each pulley by hand and see if you can find what's catching.

If it still ticks listen to various parts, like the vacuum pump, the fuel lifter pump, the turbo etc using a stick or long screwdriver to find/isolate the noise.

You can run the engine for around 5 mins without the belt attached, the main issue is that the water pump isn't running so you don't want to get the engine overly hot.

Let us know and post a picture of your engine Bay.

Check the bolts holding the rocker shaft have been properly torqued down after the head gasket got changed. I would also double check the valve clearances.

The (probable mug) who mentioned "new engine" -

What did they say was wrong with it?

So many things can create a ticking on the 300. Most are external to the block itself and can easily be changed or adjusted.

Bit of a long shot for you. My 300 was making a ticking kinda noise I couldn’t pin down. Took the belt off to start checking things and found a big chunk out of the belt. This was causing the noise. You’ve prob already checked your belt but just thought I’d say mate. ✌🏻
