Would anyone know what else squeaks in a 300tdi fan belt tensioner apart from the bearing? Whenever I replace a bearing the squeal never goes away. Only a new tensioner sorts it and this really drives me round the bend especially since so many posts on the internet stare that a replacement beseing is a cheap and easy fix. Yes it is cheap and easy (quick too - did today's job in under 10 minutes... the tensioner had a regular circlip rather than one of those nasty snap rings) but it never works for me hence I end up buying new tensioner just the same

Sorted mates thank you. As bluedog rightly said I am in malta so we don't have pennies. 5 years ago I had fitted a 1 euro cent coin underneath a brand new tensioner that squealed and it stayed put until recently. I just fitted a 20 euro cent coin in its place and all is quiet now. It cost a fair bit more than a penny

That's because you've stopped your belt squeaking. Gate's belts are the way to go. They've got a less rubbery surface, so they don't squeal as they rub across the misaligned pulley. Your 20cent coin has fortunately gone in to the correct position to realign the run of the belt.
